Author Notes: I was lying in bed last night trying to go to sleep because I had an interview today when this story hit me. Forget everything you know about the series. This is the shortest chapter of the story. I want to thank my beta reader Bev.

Lee knew it was her, could tell from a distance, but what he was wondering was what she was doing in here. The door had been locked or at least a form of it since there were no locks on Galactica. He could see her knees were pulled to her chest and she was holding herself, from where he stood it appeared she was crying. He could only remember seeing her cry once and that was after Zak died over two years ago.

“Kara is that you,” Lee said playing innocent.

“You know it’s me so don’t play that game Lee,” Kara said not moving.

“What are you doing in here,” Lee asked walking towards her.

“I should be dead,” Kara stated.

“What,” Lee exclaimed shocked and confused as he sat next to her.

“If I hadn’t hit Tigh I would have been out with my squadron…I should have been with them,” Kara said distant.

“Things happen for a reason Kara…you lived and fought,” Lee said.

“Do you hate me…for what I did,” Kara asked seriously looking at him.

He couldn’t speak he wanted to but the look she was giving was unlike any he’d ever seen. This was the Kara Thrace you never saw but always knew was there. The women who was weak and vulnerable, he knew she existed he just never thought he’d see her like this. He’s seen her cry, he’d seen her lose herself, but he had never seen her so lost.

“It wasn’t your fault,” Lee said.

“I passed him…I shouldn’t have,” Kara said.

“Zak knew what to do…was he a bad pilot,” Lee finally asked.

“No he just didn’t have the feel for flying…and he was sloppy,” Kara said.

“Okay none of that caused his accident…I could never hate you Kara,” Lee said.

“You know why I choose Zak over all the guys I dated,” Kara asked.

“You loved him,” Lee said looking away.

“No…he didn’t ask for it all. I could still have my wall up and be with him,” Kara said.

“He just wanted you,” Lee said.

“But I don’t know…there are things about me he never knew,” Kara said wiping away the tears.

“Like,” Lee asked.

“My dad left us when I was five,” Kara said.

“I know that,” Lee said.

“My mom is…was an alcoholic,” Kara said.

“I know that too,” Lee said.

“That’s the point Lee,” Kara said.

He could see that he was not getting the big picture because he was sure Zak knew these things too. He could see that something deep inside her was tearing her apart but could so nothing. He was afraid if he tried to touch her she’d punch him, landing herself in the brig because Tigh would not let it go. He would look for any reason to put her in the brig again, and Lee would not allow that.

“You know all that Zak thought my mom was some great single mother who did the best she could,” Kara said.

“I take it he never met her,” Lee mumbled remembering his encounter with Karen Thrace.

“No…I raised myself since I was six, he never knew that…there are so many things he didn’t know,” Kara said.

“Why didn’t you tell him,” Lee said.

“Zak liked to judge people from where they came from…I was afraid he would do that to me too,” Kara confused.

“You shouldn’t have been…Zak would have loved you no matter what,” Lee said.

“I’m not sure about that,” Kara said as more tears fell.

Lee didn’t care anymore he moved more towards her wiping away the tears that fell. He pressed her head against his chest just holding onto her as she cried. She cried for her squadron, she cried for her homeworld, she cried for all the lives lost on the twelve colonies, and she cried for Zak.

“I can only imagine what I look like,” Kara mumbled moving away from him.

“You look fine,” Lee said wiping away her tears.

“Lee do you think your dad would blame me,” Kara asked softly.

“No…are you going to tell him,” Lee said.

“I should…he’s been so good to me the last two years,” Kara said.

“I think we started to rebuild our relationship today,” Lee said with a soft smile.

“You know you’re just like him…it’s kind of scary actually,” Kara laughed.

Lee knew he shouldn’t be this close to her; he shouldn’t have been touching her. He shouldn’t have wiped away her tears caressing her face the way he did. He shouldn’t have pulled her close hugging her so tight he could feel her move against him. He shouldn’t feel what he feels for her, but he didn’t care anymore. She needed him and he needed her and that was all the mattered right now

“If you ever tell anyone about this…I’ll kill you,” Kara said.

“I wouldn’t dare,” Lee said smiling.

“I’m being serious Lee,” Kara argued.

“I know,” Lee said.

Lee looked at Kara and he saw what was behind her mask, he saw what no one else did, not even Zak. He knew her mother was a trashy alcoholic mother who didn’t care about her. He knew she couldn’t remember her father because he stopped coming around when she three. He knew she raised her self and that’s why she acted the way she did. He knew Kara Thrace, the woman not the pilot. He wondered what Zak would have done if he knew about her life. He hoped Zak wouldn’t care, but like their mother Zak judged people. And he had a funny feeling he would have judged Kara too.

Next Part: Lee finds out who Kara’s father is, and that he is very much alive.
