I’ve just completed a successful follow-up inspection of the Delphi Moon. I think thing went well with Captain Avery. There are no pressing problems that require military assistance.
I’m on my way back to the shuttle. I see a young girl running towards me. She’s Fay Machree. She isn’t a child. She was my first girl friend. We were both five at the time. “Hello Fay, I’m so happy to see you. I was afraid I’d never see you again,” I say smiling. I hug and swing her around like a child. Fay giggles with glee. “Where are your parents?” I ask gently.
Daddy is with the Lords of Kobol. Mum is coming.” Fay replies.
“Fay, Fay, you can’t bother the pilot. Sir, I’m sorry for my daughter’s behavior. Fay, Come along,” the older woman says breathlessly.
“Hello, Mrs. Machree, It’s Lee Adama. Fay and I were just catching up,” I say in what I hope is a reassuring tone.
Mrs. Machree stops in surprise and replies. “Selena Adama’s boy? Well of course you are. You have her eyes. Fay obviously remembers you. Would you have time to have tea with Fay? There are so few people close to her age.”
I know I should move on to my next inspection. But I really could you an hour away from the military with someone who likes me. I’m ahead of schedule. I accept Mrs. Machree’s invitation.
Fay and I have tea in the dinning hall. We are served tea, juice, and bread and jam sandwiches. Fay is talking almost continually. I’m listening carefully to her trying to understand her.
I ask Fay if she likes the Delphi Moon. She replies, “Its part of our voyage. My path needs to cross yours now,”
“Why do our paths need to cross now?” I ask.
“You are the one who hears me. I need to protect you. You must listen, hear and understand. I hope you remember how? I like this juice. I like its orange color. There are sixty-four lights in this room. Can I fly a viper after tea? There are one hundred and seventy life pods on the Delphi Moon. I’ve seen inside life pod one hundred three. Our Cabin number is Three-hundred-one. You are my favorite boy friend,” Fay pauses.
“I will try and hear. I have missed our talks. I’m glad you are enjoying your juice. Where would you fly if you had a viper?” I ask.
“I’d fly round and round so all my friends on the Delphi Moon could see me and I’d see the ship blink,” Fay replies. “Six will never get over her first love. She has enthralled him and hides in his head. Only he and other Cylons can see her. You need to look for twins, triplets or more. Cylons look like us. Some don’t remember what they are and love us and we love them. Lee you need to tell your dad about the Cylons. Lee you are in danger. You are special like me. All the specials are in danger. Only if you hear and understand will we see each other again,” she pauses and puts her chin on my shoulder. “I want to see you again.” She kisses me.
She says, “It’s okay. We were special children together. I get to kiss you. Your mom knows. Your dad still doesn’t know that you are special. You need talk to Starbuck and get her to help you. Zak wants her to make sure you are okay. It’s time for me to say Bye Bye,” She stands and walks toward the entrance to the dinning hall just as she reaches the door her mother appears. Fay waves goodbye. Mrs. Machree mouths “Thank You,” and they are gone.
I look at the liquid in my cup. I remember my time with Fay as children. Although her words were always strange, she was a good truthful friend. She knew all sorts of things trivial, critical and mystical. My problem was putting together her thoughts so I understood.
