Chapter 1

Zak and I are in hack. Zak’s brother, Lee has been MIA for four months on Myra Dawn. Zak is losing it and I’m not far behind.

“Kara, where do you think Lee is now?” Zak says rubbing his eyes.

“How the Frak should I know” I snap. I’m not hiding my frustration with this useless conversation.

“PLEEZ pretend you know. Tell me!” Zak wines.

I think for a while. “OK, if Lee was as handsome as you, he could have been captured by locals and sold as a sex slave to one of the Amazon Matriarchs. Lee could be warm, well fed and safe in bed with his new 250 pound tattooed girl friend.” I say this because Zak has this crazy idea that Lee is fragile. This fairy story covered Zak’s concerns: Lee didn’t do well in the cold, Lee needs to eat, and Lee needs a warm quite place to rest. Mostly Lee did not belong on a frozen hostile planet like Myra Dawn.

“What do you mean if Lee was handsome? Lee looks like our Mom. Got her blue eyes. Women really like Lee.”

I can’t believe Zak is building a case for his brother as a boy toy. But the hack is very boring.

“Hey, in The Adventures of Zak Adama, Lee plays a sweet, shy academic. You are the handsome charming action hero,” I reply to keep things going.

“Well he is. Gee, I let you read some old stories. Suddenly, you know Lee and me,” snaps Zak.

“OK, you’re going tell me,” I saying giving Zak my best bored silly look.

Zak stops. Moves his face like he can’t find the words. This is new. Zak can always talk.

“Kara this is family stuff and you can’t talk to anybody about it. Not even with my family until they bring it up,” Zak says.

Zak has moved to face me and has moved closer. What ever Zak is trying to say is important to him. And I love secrets.

“I won’t tell,” I whisper.

“Both sides of my families have long histories of space travel: Viper pilots, ships captains, explorers and navigators. Some of the ‘original travelers’ to the colonies may have had some genetic characteristics that allowed them to travel into unknown space without modern technology. A small number of people have a gene or genes that make them better pilots, FTL navigators, or better explorers. My dad has a gene that some theorize made him a great pilot. You might have that gene too.”

“There’s an old Proverb: ‘One gift from the Lords is blessing. Two gifts are a burden. Three gifts are a curse.’ It could have been written about these genes. These genes cause more brain activity and more layering of gray matter. In theory, people with several of these genes would able to retain and process much more information than the rest of us. Unfortunately, most people just are overwhelmed and are never able to live normal lives. Too much light, too much noise, causes severe pain. Or they can’t tell what’s important and what’s not and seem crazy.” Zak stops. He looks uneasy. He seems not to be able to find the words.

“I thought Lee would always need me. Lee has all of the known genes.” Zak almost chokes out. “When we were small, Lee needed rest, he needed to be protected from too much light, noise. Under any stress he’d end up wrapped in a blanket shaking. He’d whimper in his sleep. Don’t get me wrong Lee was always sane, sweet, and very smart.”

Zak’s voice has changed he sounds almost like a kid. “It was usually the three of us: Mom, Lee, and me. Even though I’m eighteen months younger than Lee, I was bigger and stronger. I could tell if Lee needed quiet time and tell Mom or as we grew older tell Lee. With me, Lee could be with kids without an adult. As a team we had a great time growing up. We had lots of friends. Lee could figure out how to do just about anything and get us out of trouble. We did things, that I wouldn’t have been able to do on my own.”

“Zak, if Lee has this condition, how did he get into the academy or into flight training?” I ask.

“There are laws against genetic profiling. Lee passed all physical exams, isn’t sick, and is a very talented officer,” Zak snaps back. “Dad may have helped me out sometimes. Lee wouldn’t take any special treatment. Lee did everything on his own merits. Lee can’t change the way his brain works. He can handle himself in any predicable circumstance. Myra Dawn is not predictable. I can’t stand the idea of my brother alone and suffering. Only Mom and I really know him.”

“Zak, Lee is a grown man. If he didn’t have stamina, he would not have made it through the Academy, never mind first in his class or cadet captain. He has grown out of any problems he had as a child. Please have confidence in him. Heck, I was his wingman the second half of Advanced Flight Training School. He can be one tough arrogant ass. ”

“Kara, Lee’s not arrogant. He’s suffered too much to be arrogant. He uses meditation to maintain control. He’s hasn’t grown out of anything. Lee’s been studying Pac meditation, martial arts and philosophy since he was five. He always feels different.”

I needed to figure out how to get Zak focused on Flight training. He would be crushed if he didn’t become a viper pilot. I don’t know what I would do if I lost my wings. We are spending too much time in hack.

The hall was getting nosy. The duty officer and one very “spit and polish” viper pilot enter the room.

Zak’s on his feet frantically reaching through the bars and saying, “Lee, Lee are you OK?”

A guard commands, “Step away from the bars, now.”

The Duty Officer is saying “Lieutenant Adama, please stay behind the yellow line. The visit will end if you cross the line.”

Lieutenant Lee Adama says, “Thank you, Ensign, I understand the rules. I wont take any more of your time.”

The Ensign knows when he’s been dismissed. “You have fifteen minutes,” he says as he leaves.

Lieutenant Adama looks at the guards and says, “I don’t want to be disturbed.” The guards move off toward the desk area. Lieutenant Adama has taken control of the visit. Suddenly, the command presence drops.

“Hi Zak, Hi Kara,” Lee says with a big grin.

When Lee grins he looks like Zak. Lee doesn’t have Zak’s dreamy brown bedroom eyes or wavy hair. Lee Adama has his mother’s blue eyes, classic Caprian facial structure, and pale complexion. His hair is dark brown. Lee is a couple of inches taller than Zak and is more muscular. His cheeks might be a little hollow, but there is nothing weak or fragile about Lee Adama. The man I love is nuts.

Lee has crossed the yellow line. The brothers are hugging each other through the bars.

Lee ends the hug by moving his arms to rest overhead against the bars. “I’m fine. What about you?” Lee asks while putting a funny smile on his face.

“I’m good,” Zak replies.

“So what’s the charge?” Lee inquires.

“Drunk and disorderly,” Zak says with exaggerated sheepishness.

“You must be getting good at that by now,” Lee says.

“Everyone needs a skill” Zak tosses out one of his standard answers with mock pride.

“Oh, I thought Viper pilot was the skill you were working on,” Lee says putting on yet another silly face. These guys are mugging around like ten year olds. I must admit I didn’t know that Lee could move his face like that.

“Hi Lee, date any Amazons on Myra Dawn?” I pipe in. I could feel left out pretty quickly if this too cute show of brotherly affection keeps up.

“Uh, No, I did meet a few. (Pause) How’s the bride to be?” Lee replies blushing. Lee is always courteous; I bet he’s embarrassed about leaving me out of the conversation.

“Good. Are you going to be around long enough for us to visit, without the bars you seem to like hanging on to so much?” I ask.

Dropping his hands to his sides, Lee says, “I have 30 days sick leave. Then I need to re-qualify my flight status. So I’ll be around for the at least the next two months. I want to spend time with Mom and go to the lake. I’d like it if we could all spend some time at the lake. But I know that may not be practical given your training schedule.”

“You want us all to go and hang out at the house on Claw Lake?” Zak asks excitedly.

“Yes, I’ve already spoken to Mom. She seems to like the idea. She can adjust her schedule. So it all depends on what you guys can manage. I sent Dad a message letting him know I’m OK, but I haven’t heard back from him,” Lee says.

“Even three or four days would work, but your flight training is more important” Lee continues.

The three of us spend the next thirty or forty minutes, chatting about getting together, flying, and wedding plans. Lee goes off to check into a room at the bachelor officers’ quarters and get something to eat.

Zak is taking a nap. Finally, he’s at peace. I still don’t understand why Zak is so defensive and protective of his brother. Lee may have had problems as a child but he’s a healthy adult. His image of Lee is so different from mine.

I was on the verge of washing out of advanced flight school. Nobody could touch me in the air, although Lee came very close. Navigation was the problem. I came up through the ranks. The first time I flew, I found myself. I quickly became a shuttle pilot, and a warrant officer. Although I’d taken some college courses, I didn’t have the mathematics background to understand a lot of the navigation. I resented my privileged classmates. None more than super achieving “Sparta Boy,” Ensign Lee Adama. As a last ditch effort, Blade, the captain in charge of the program, assigned me to fly wingman to Apollo.

Right on the flight deck, “Sparta Boy” Apollo made three things clear. One, he would not strike me. He would duck, run, and if he had to restrain me but any violence was on me. Two, we were a team. We would take turns in the point and wing positions. Three, he would help me with navigation. We didn’t become buddies. He’s still an arrogant know-it-all snob. But the flying is fantastic. Apollo can keep up. He kept his word on no violence or teasing; he limited himself to very polite, professional discussion. He made sure we each got equal time in both positions. And somehow he could always come up with a way to explain, demonstrate, or break down, navigation so I understood it. I showed my thanks with demonstrations of my gutter mouth, or I’d light up a cigar and blow the smoke in his face, right after he showed me three ways to look at a difficult concept.

A virus hit the base. It was brutal; high fever, chills, headache, and muscle ache. I caught it and I guess I forgot to take my meds. I wake up in a corner screaming my head off. Blade is saying, “Starbuck, you are out. Being a viper pilot is more than flying. You have to be able to live with others.”

Then I hear that quiet voice, “She hasn’t been taking her meds.”

Then to me, “Starbuck, try some gingerale.” A cold can is in my hand. I try some. It tastes good.

“Here take your pills,” Apollo says putting them in my free hand. I take the pills and wash them down with long drag on the soda.

“How do you feel?” he asks.

“You made me all cold.” I moan.

“Oh, is that it.” the quiet voice replies. I feel the soda can being taken away and suddenly this real warm sweatshirt is surrounding me my hands are moving into the sleeves of the shirt. The shirt falls almost to the hem of my shorts. The soda can is put back in my right hand.

“You should get back into your bed.” It sounds like a suggestion but I realize he’s managing me, and strangely I don’t mind. A hand on my shoulder guides me to my bed. I just sit on the bed. I’m staring at the soda can. I look up. I don’t like it that he isn’t there. He’s back in a few moments. He’s got a washcloth and a towel. He washes my face and dries it. Then he washes my hands and dries them. My hands and feet are cold. He’s gently rubbing my hands. His hands are very warm. Just before I pull my hands away, he stops. I guess he could tell they were warmer. My feet get the same treatment.

“Starbuck, where do you keep socks?” Apollo asks.

I point to my footlocker. I don’t think I’m helping but the socks just slide on.

“How about drinking some more of that ginger ale?” He asks.

I put the can to my mouth and drain it. He takes the can. He moves my legs under the covers. Fluffs the pillow and tucks me in. I don’t remember ever being tucked in.

“Get some rest,” he whispers.

“You’re going to make a damn fine mother,” I say.

After a few minutes I hear Blade say, “Looks like you got her calmed down.”

“Yes Sir, I think she’ll rest now,” Apollo replies his voice sounding very soft. “ Her fever probably spiked and she’s probably dehydrated.”

“Look Apollo, I can’t order you to take care of her,” Blade says. “The Lords know I wouldn’t do it. But if you don’t, I have to send her to Life Station with a report of this incident. She’s out of the program.”

“Sir, I can remind her to take her meds and bring her fluids. I’ll let you know if she doesn’t improve by 1400 hours,” Apollo replies quietly.

“Sounds like the plan, Thanks,” Blade responds. “Good night, Apollo”.

Apollo has managed Blade. If I got kicked out, Apollo would have gotten a new wingman. Someone he would have to baby-sit in the air. Apollo needs a wingman, who is as at least as good a pilot as he, so he can sharpen his skills in the air. Apollo is thinking of himself, right?

My fever was down by morning.

I took some flak from my classmates. Apollo’s friends make sure I know he had a very high fever and should have been in bed. Not playing Mom to me. The only other woman in the class said I was a fool; she would have left the sweatshirt on the floor and taken Apollo to bed.

I finished advanced flight training. I kept Lee’s sweatshirt, it’s from Sparta’s athletic department. I still like to wear it when I’m sick. I never said thanks. But I cut back on blowing cigar smoke in his face. Which was quite a sacrifice, smoke always made his eyes water, and it was all he could do to keep from coughing. Knowing I could cause Apollo misery at will, made following his orders easier.

When I met Zak I was very attracted to him. It was all Zak. When it came to trusting him enough to start a relationship. It happened only because Zak was Lee’s brother.

Zak is still asleep. Never having had a family, I wonder what a family vacation would be like. When Zak and I became engaged I had met his parents. Zak’s parents had been divorced over ten years, but seemed to be friends.

Zak’s Dad is the legendary war hero, Commander William Adama. The Commander is proud and supportive of Zak. He’s quick to say that Zak has always done at least as well as he, at the same age. The Commander is very willing to smooth the way for Zak. Zak tells you who his parents are in the first conversation.

As a top rated Viper pilot, I was a suitable daughter-in-law. My history as a troublemaker caused the Commander to reminisce about his youthful adventures. Coming up through the ranks wasn’t a disadvantage either: education was a lifetime endeavor. The Commander has spent most of Zak’s life in space.

Zak’s mother is Dr. Selena Adama, Senior Professor of FTL theory at the University of Caprica. She strikes me as even more intellectual than Lee. She has always worked. Selena is a beautiful woman. Even in her late forties, heads turn when she enters a room.

Selena offers her sons unconditional love. Zak is a handsome charming boy. If Zak loves me, I was part of the family. I’m her daughter.

She has called me several times since Lee went missing. She’s overwhelmed by her fear of losing Lee. She shared Zak’s concerns about Lee’s ability to handle the harsh environment. Lee is her sweet baby.

I couldn’t picture the Commander out of uniform. What would Lee be like without a viper? What would Lee and Zak be like together? Lee certainly seemed different a few hours ago. What about this fragile baby stuff? The idea of Lee being anything but dependable just isn’t right.

Chapter 2

I can’t help but smile. My son, Lee, would be mortified if he finds out about this special treatment. He is still young and has not accepted the reality of how the military works. The Battlestar Galactica had made a FTL jump to rendezvous with the Starcruiser Formosa. The Formosa had then jumped, bringing me within two Raptor Jumps of Picon. The purpose of this travel was to get me home on emergency leave. My son is a hero. Admiral Cortona, Commander of Colonies Marine forces, had requested my presence and arranged special transport.

Four months ago I was informed that Lee was listed as MIA while on a classified mission to Myra Dawn.

Officially I had only been told that my son had performed in an exemplary fashion during four months of hazardous duty. Although malnourished and under weight, the Lieutenant’s physical health was good. He has not suffered any permanent physical injury. However, based on the nature of the service, some post-traumatic stress was inevitable.

As the Commander of the Battlestar Galactica, I have unofficial channels. I know that due to unusual combination of ionized dust trapped in the atmosphere and solar radiation, travel and communication with the planet were impossible for 15 to 18 weeks. At last report, thirty-two of the Ranger force had been killed in action. Based on the Colonies history with Myra Dawn, it was not expected that the eighty-eight remaining Rangers would survive with out re-supply, air support and reinforcements. Lee had been assigned to the mission to replace a demolitions expert at the last minute. Damn Lee’s structural engineering degree and military cross training in demolitions and small arms that qualified him for the mission. Through rapid attrition Lee became the ranking officer shortly after the last message. Lee is credited with keeping the remaining eighty-six troops alive for sixteen weeks.

Lee would have a silver laurel on his record. He would only receive a medal when and if the mission was declassified. The military loved heroes. Commendations are difficult to earn in peacetime. I hate to think about what emotional price my son would pay, but I’m proud and recognize the importance to his career.

Prior to arriving on Picon, I make a mental list of what I need to do in order to prepare to deal with Lee. I will call Selena. She will know where Lee is and have some idea of his mental state. I will go see Zak and Starbuck. Zak can get Lee to relax and have a good time. I’ll get a professional consultation. I need to know how to best support my traumatized son.

Chapter 3

I find him eating supper alone in the officer’s club. As I look at him I am reminded that he is the youngest of my friends from the Battlestar Resolute. I take my career very seriously and choose my friends for competence, intelligence, and strength of character. I‘m Captain Paula Wade, until my promotion and reassignment about six months ago; we were part of the same group of friends. We often ate at the same table, played cards, and traded books and music. “Well, I hear your terrorizing my staff. What do you have to say for yourself, Lieutenant Adama?” I say.

He snaps to attention and gives me a crisp salute. I return his salute.

“Sir, congratulations on your promotion. Who have I terrorized?” Apollo says smiling.

Smiling, I say, “I’m in charge of the base Brig. I have been informed that you used the facility for an extended family reunion.”

“My visit to my brother terrorized your staff?” he asks raising an eyebrow.

I respond, “It was your friends. While you were loitering, three Marine Rangers came looking for you. They insisted on waiting. The action on Myra Dawn is a very widely known secret among Marines. My staff ate up your pal’s ‘theoretical’ stories of their experiences. My staff seemed very impressed with the lieutenant in charge on Myra Dawn. Your Rangers bullied my office staff into letting them see the files on your brother and his friend.”

“Oh, I apologize. I had no idea anything inappropriate occurred,” He says with concern. “I wanted to coordinate our participation in memorial services for the casualties.”

“Yes, I know. As a result of your visit, work stopped, administrative procedures were broken, and evidence may have been lost. I had to personally review the records of Ensign Adama and Lieutenant Junior Grade Thrace.” Pausing, I watch Apollo look more uncomfortable. I’m surprised that Apollo didn’t pick up on the reference to his heroism. I’d never seen any enlisted Marines, let alone senior elite Rangers so impressed with an officer. “Why didn’t you let me know you were on base?”

“I arrived five hours ago. I haven’t gotten myself organized yet,” he replies.

“Well I guess I’ll forgive you. Are you alone? Can I join you?” I’m an athletically built thirty-two year old woman. I have short brown hair and light gray eyes.

“Please, I’d like that,” Apollo says realizing that I’ve been teasing him and that he has fallen for it. He can’t help but smile and blush.

After I have ordered my dinner and been served a glass of ambrosia, I ask, “Apollo, most people would have come straight to me, as soon as they heard that I had one of their relatives in the brig. Why didn’t you? Are you embarrassed by your brother?”

“I’m not embarrassed by my brother. I don’t condone the behavior that got him in the brig, but I’m proud that he’s my brother. I didn’t come running to you because I respect you and I respect my brother.” He replies in a very flat tone.

“Please, relax. I just want to know what you are thinking. Visiting family and friends in the brig, isn’t the best way to start a leave,” I say to be supportive. Lee Adama is very conservative; he will not accept anything that is not in the best interest of the service, even when his own family is involved. I brace myself as I prepare to layout the plan I already have in motion.

“As I told you, I reviewed the records of your brother and his fiancée. In the case of your brother his problematic behavior begins shortly after you were listed as MIA. Your brother was suffering. He thought you were lost. His behavior was inappropriate. But now that you are safe, he can probably control himself.”

“So I’m responsible for my brother’s drinking?” he asks.

“No, your brother is responsible for his own actions. Military service sometimes requires sacrifice. The sacrifices made by family and friends often go unnoticed. In this case, it got noticed. The number of infractions your brother has accumulated could affect his military career and his flight status.” I hope that Apollo’s sense of family responsibility and concern for his brother, will allow him to understand the wisdom of my plan.

“I have spoken to your brother. He is elated that you are back. He says he is responsible for his actions. But he admits that he has been worried about you and that it might have affected his judgment.”

“I also spoke to Lieutenant Thrace. She says Ensign Adama was close to losing his mind with worry. She made it clear several times that you and your brother have no affect on her actions. She claims not to have been worried about you at all. She is an odd one. Only her flying ability keeps her in the service. Her record is horrid, but she has had a few quiet periods. One occurred when she was your wingman.”

“Based on the record and my interviews, I contacted the base Advocate General with a recommendation. The result is that the current charges will be dropped. If your brother and Thrace stay out of the Brig for 90 days and complete the required stress management course, a note will be placed in their records documenting stress due to family hardship as mitigating factor for all infractions for the last four months.” I wait. How much has Apollo heard?

He sits very still as he thinks about what he’s heard. “Thank you for what you’ve done for my brother and Starbuck. Thank you for making me aware of the pain the last four months caused my family and friends,” He says with sincere gratitude.

“You’re welcome. You can pick up your two jail birds after the memorial service tomorrow,” I say with a wink.

Our meals are served. I notice that Apollo has ordered a fruit salad. “Nothing tastes as good as fresh fruit. It was the first thing I ordered when I got planet side,” I comment.

His mouth is too full of strawberries to swallow quickly. He looks up and nods happily. When he relaxes, he is very cute. It’s part classic good looks, part athletic masculinity, and part shy sweetness that make him nearly irresistible. I’m very annoyed with Ensign Adama whose confinement has lost me any hope of ever sleeping with Lee Adama.

Chapter 4

“What do you mean Ensign Adama can’t have visitors?” Adama almost roars.

“Sir, Ensign Adama is being processed. My orders are to release Ensign Adama and Lieutenant Junior Grade Thrace to Lieutenant Lee Adama,” I reply. I don’t tell the Commander that I wrote Ensign Adama’s release plan, which had then been signed off by myself, Captain of the Marine Guard, the Base Commander, and the Base Judge Advocate. The release plans are the orders to which I’m referring. I’m not going to lose the pleasure of seeing gratitude and happiness in my friend’s blue eyes.

“I’m the Ensign’s father. I insist,” Adama barks.

“The current charges against your son and Thrace have been dropped. If they stay out of trouble and complete a stress management course, statements of mitigation due to stress caused by family hardship for all infractions for the last four months will be added to their records. Sir, this release plan is extremely generous. Your son and Thrace have done nothing to deserve it. Releasing them to Lieutenant Adama shows respect for his service,” I state looking directly into the old war horses eyes. After a couple of seconds I see a look of understanding cross the Commander’s face.

“Does my elder son know?” Adama asks with concern.

“He understands the facts of the release plan. His idealism and humility permit him to accept compassion for his family from the Captain of the Marine Guard and the Judge Advocate. I assure you the Captain of the Marine Guard isn’t often compassionate,” I say with a chuckle.

“Thank you, Captain Wade, I see you have handled the situation with kindness and tact. I am in your debt. If Lieutenant Adama is due to arrive soon I would like to wait,” Adama replies gratefully.

“He should be here any time. Would you like a cup of coffee?” I ask. We settle down and wait for Lee to arrive.

Lee feels exhausted. He had gone to the memorials out of respect to the living Marines. He didn’t know any of the dead. He had expected to be largely invisible. He planned to sit in the back. The mission was classified. No one should know what happened. He’d been shocked when he’d been seated like a dignitary. He was repeatedly thanked for his care of the dead or bringing them home. The temporary burials had been necessary for sanitary reasons. Arranging for exhumation and honor guard transport was simply following the Rangers tradition of “no man left behind.” He had done nothing. Being treated like a hero was very unnerving. He only did what had to be done. Keeping the Rangers in his charge alive was his job. If he were a better officer fewer inhabitants would have died. He was there for the men and women who had trusted him, and for the family and friends of the dead. He hoped he had hidden his discomfort, and he had said the right things. His words of comfort and respect seemed useless to him. As he reached the steps of the Brig, he takes minute to get centered and focus on his brother and his friends Thrace and Wade.

Lee announces himself and is shown to my office.

Lee is wearing his dress uniform. He moves with quick confidence but he looks thin, tired and wary.

Lee is focused on me and doesn’t see his father. Lee enters the rooms giving me a formal crisp salute. I respond with a causal movement of the hand from my chair. “Good Morning, Wade,” Lee says. It wasn’t the words; it’s his smile and the light in his eyes that captures my attention.

“Good Morning, Son,” Adama says while leaving his chair and going to embrace his son.

I watch father and son embrace. Lee looks surprised. Lee has lost his smile.

After a few moments I ask if I should send for Ensign Adama and Lieutenant Junior Grade Thrace.

“Yes, please,” Lee replies with a smile that doesn’t disappoint me.

After a brief reunion and thanks to me, the Adamas and Thrace leave. As I reach my desk, I hear a tap on her door. It’s Lee Adama. He comes toward me with his head down trying to hide a blush. As he reaches me, he takes my hand and raises his head. “I don’t have the words to thank you,” he whispers. Then he kisses me. It’s over too quickly and he’s gone.

Chapter 5

The Commander has taken the three of us to lunch at the officers club. Zak is on the top of the world. He is with three of the people he loves most. His dad is picking up the tab for steaks. He’s talking about how much he love’s to fly, what a great pilot I am and asking his dad to recount his most memorable adventures. The Commander is encouraging Zak and contributing to this familiar and comforting chatter. I’m holding up my end. Lee smiles and answers on queue. I think Lee’s saying “sir” too much even for him.

Zak wants Lee to eat more. Is Lee’s steak cooked right? Does Lee want salt, catsup, or steak sauce? What about more rolls? Should he order a glass of milk for Lee? Lee responds with “I’m OK” or “No, Thanks.” Zak is finally successful, Lee will have strawberry shortcake for desert.

At the end of lunch, the Commander says, “Lee, I’m sure you would like to change out of your dress uniform. Zak, Kara, come with me. We need to talk about your most recent stay in hack.”

The Commander waits until Lee has left us, and the three of us are in his suite at the Bachelor Officer’s Quarters. The Commander has a suite with living room and kitchenette. We are seated in the living room.

“I am not going to visit the past,” Adama begins, “I need your help”.

“Yes, Sir,” Zak and I reply in unison.

“As you know, Lee’s last mission was unexpected and very dangerous. What I am now going to tell you is “classified”, I am only telling you this because Lee’s emotional health is at stake. Do you understand?” Adama says.

“Yes, Sir,” We reply.

Adama says, “The main ranger unit was ambushed; the Marine’s senior officers were all killed. Lee found himself in command of the surviving Rangers. They were cut off, with no hope of rescue for months. They were vastly out numbered, and initially without allies. Insurgents targeted them. Lee is credited with keeping the Rangers alive and developing relationships with the miners and native peoples. These relationships permit the start of negotiations to bring peace to the planet.”

“Lee is a finely trained officer, but he is a viper pilot. He’s not a marine ranger or a diplomat. He was thrust into a leadership position with no guidance or support. As an unknown officer lacking training and experience, taking and holding command was a major challenge in itself. As the leader, Lee was isolated. He had to deal with the stress and pain alone. Lee is a hero, but he needs to heal.”

“Dad, Is Lee going to be OK? What can I do?” Zak asks.

“He needs to deal with his feelings. He will be encouraged to take counseling and stress management training. As his family, we need to encourage him to rest, relax and reflect.” Adama says, “ Zak, you’re the one Lee finds it easiest to relax with. You need to make time for him especially over the next few months.”

“That’s not a problem, Dad,” Zak says.

“Lee can’t be worried that you are in the brig. By the way, you’d still be in hack, if it weren’t for Lee. Not that he would ever ask for special treatment, even for you, Zak. But the Marines are grateful.”

Zak and I get a quick tutorial on “post traumatic stress”, and get warned that Lee may not have control of his emotions. Lee may suddenly become angry, sad or even violent.

“Dad, Lee wants the family to go up to Claw lake house. Lee has always liked the lake. The swimming and fresh air would be good for him. It’s a good place to relax,” Zak informs his Dad.

“I have fond memories of the place myself,” Adama replies.

Zak and I go check on Lee and do a little catching up. The Commander stays behind to make arrangements.

Chapter 6

Three days later, the Commander, Zak and I are on a flight to Caprica. The military runs regular flights from Picon to Caprica, the largest Colony. Military personnel and their dependents on Picon travel to Caprica and then use regularly scheduled commercial flights to meet their personal travel needs. The transport from Picon is very basic, no food service, no entertainment, and hard seats.

Lee went ahead two days ago to visit his mother. He will pick us up at the military airport.

Zak is napping. He has been working hard with classes and trying to get ahead of his required flight hours. He has gotten 18 hours of flight time in the last forty-eight hours. Twenty hours of flight time per week is scheduled per student during basic flight training. The Commander has pulled some major strings. Zak is taking a week off flight training, but will have the missed flight time scheduled before and after. I’m taking accumulated leave.

I want to let Zak sleep so I resist the temptation to chat with the Commander. I really could use a cup of coffee.

Bored, I find myself listening in on a conversation coming from the row in back.

“Mott, now that we’re home, I gotta come clean,” a man says. “The Boss almost got killed twice on our first trip to the country side. Why we had to introduce ourselves to the rural tribes I don’t know. It’s like going back in time, bows and arrows, mystics, and Amazons”.

The first night, we knew we were being watched. We had set up camp. The Boss told me that he wanted to invite them in. I was to make sure the team had cover. He took off his helmet and body armor, and tossed a log on the fire. He stands in the light of the fire. Two Matriarchs and two men come to the edge of the camp.

The two men wait at the edge of the camp. The older women is about my size 6’2” and 220 pounds. She looks about sixty. Her hair is gray and her tattoos have faded to a medium blue. She’s carrying a bow and quiver. Her fur coat has been dyed blue and her hair is wrapped in a brightly colored scarf. She goes straight for the Boss, and says to the other woman, “This is the one: the hunter and lord.”

The younger and larger woman joins her friend. She is at least 6’5” and 260 pounds and is probably in her late thirties. She’s carrying a pole. She’s wearing a tan fur coat and leather pants and boots. The left side of her face and neck are completely covered in tattoos, and her black hair is done up in complicated braids.

The older woman introduces herself as Seer, and the other as Dame Magda, Regent matriarch of the tribe.

The Boss does a formal introduction: his name, his colony of origin, his rank, Colonial Rangers division and unit identification and a statement of service to the Twelve Colonies of Kobol and her people. It was very old-fashioned: the kind of thing you hear at formal ceremonies requiring a priest. He tells them that we are here to meet them and would like to arrange a formal introduction.

Dame Magda checks the Lieutenant out. Frak, she inspects him. Seer joins her and they walk around him stopping for a side view and a rear look. He just stands there. “Not the biggest Colonial Ranger I ever saw,” Dame Magda comments to Seer.

Dame Magda says she’ll think about inviting us to her village. The Boss bows slightly. Dame Magda turns to go. She pivots quickly and strikes with her pole. If he had stayed still she would have gotten him in the chin. But he’d moved forward and to the side so as she turned and moved the pole, he used her speed and weight to knock her to the ground, while keeping the pole in his hand. He moves the pole so one end is dangerously close to her throat.

It happened so fast, there was nothing I could do. If she’d connected, she’d have killed him. Where a viper pilot learns to use a pole like that is beyond me. What he did wasn’t luck. Taking a pole from a much larger experienced opponent takes real skill.

(MY MIND SCREAMS IT’S LEE. I look at the Commander and see that he is listening too. I listen again. I don’t want to miss anything.)

Dame Magda says to Seer, “You may be right. He may be the one.” Looking up at him she says, “I’ve decided to invite you and your attendants to our midday meal tomorrow. My husbands, Jason and Todd will come back to escort you.”

“Thank you, Dame Magda, we will be happy to join you and your family.” The Boss replies as he offers a hand to Dame Magda. He helps her up.

Seer asks, “Young Lord, are you as good with a rifle as a pole?

“Better, my rank is Lieutenant. I am not a Lord.” He replies.

Seer says to Dame Magda “We have done enough for tonight, Let’s be off.”

“Let’s, good night, Young Lord,” Dame Magda says as she uses her hand to signal to her party that she is ready to leave.

The Lt replies, “Good night Dame Magda. Good night Dame Seer.”

“Are you alright? Sir, you could have been killed. She has a hundred pounds on you. You should go back to base,” I ask.

“I’m fine. I can’t go, I have to return her pole,” The Lieutenant responds.

I remind him that he needs to stay alive long enough to get us all off this frakking cold rock. He gives me the same old line about being a very careful man and having highly trained baby-sitters. Then he surprises me.

He says loud enough for the whole team to hear, “Dame Magda, let me know she wasn’t leaving, right before she took her swing. She didn’t verbally say goodbye, which just isn’t done, and no one carries a nine-foot pole in this terrain for looks. I knew. I was in no danger. Nomadic peoples with a strong Amazon heritage settled these hills. Early colonial settlement era manners are still practiced. About a quarter of the tribal women demonstrate Matriarch characteristics due to a recessive gene. They are tall between 6’2” and 6’9” and weigh about 220 to 300 pounds. They have the same musculature as men. They dominate tribal society. The Matriarchs are the tribal leaders, priests, warriors and healers. We are here to make friends. Everyone needs to use their best manners.”

Taking advantage of the Boss’s chatty mood, I ask, “What’s this Young Lord stuff?”

“Seer is the tribe’s mystic. “Young Lord” is probably something from a dream or a vision. I think I’ll clean my rifle and get some sleep. Good night.”

“Frak, Mott, I can’t figure out how he do does it. Even given that he’s the smartest and best-trained officer I ever met. He just knew.”

“Stan, he has some kind of edge, I was with him when twelve of us hunted down the Hun Mal’s Brigade. He or Digger would take out one or two of them with a distance shot every day until they surrendered. There were twenty-six of them left when they gave up. There was no place they could go, no place to hide. Our team was out of their reach. They were damn grateful to surrender. He’s scary.”

After a few minutes I hear, Mott asks, “Stan, are you finished?”

Stan continues, “For the next couple of days things go well. It’s meet and greet. The Boss returns the pole. We have brought tea and honey for the gift giving. We accept woven carrying bags. The Medic handles a few health problems.

We find out what they want the Boss to shoot. It has been a hard winter and they want to thin their herd of bison. They only want to take the old, lame, or males. They need this done by rifle, because there isn’t enough cover to in winter to use a bow. So we go hunting. It’s cold. The air is thin; it feels like 10,000 feet on Caprica. With the local knowledge of the area and the herds, the hunt is straightforward. Each shot has to be precision to get the right animal. The Boss and Digger do the shooting. We plan to leave the next day. Boy will I be glad to get out of this place. These Amazon Dames give me the creeps.

We get back to the village. We are all very tired. We are offered ale or tea. The Boss takes tea the rest of us go for the ale. The ale’s pretty good. He steps out. I figure he’s going to the latrine. When he doesn’t come back. I go and look. He’s out cold lying on the ground. He won’t wake up. Well, everything goes ballistic. I want to know what they did to him? One of the younger dames says I’m responsible because I was the last one with him.

Dame Magda orders him brought to her house. When the Medic and I try to force our way to him. The team is ordered locked up. I got a quick look at the Boss. He was still completely out. As we are locked up, I protest. I tell them they have no right to keep us from him.

I’m told that Dame Magda has the power of law here. We are just men, with no dame.

We could be killed with a word from Magda. So we’re locked in a cellar.

After an hour or so, Seer comes with a couple of guards. I’m taken to Dame Magda’s house. I point out that they should bring the Medic, but they don’t listen. When I get there, he’s still out and now naked on what I assume is Dame Magda’s bed. As I enter I hear a couple of them talking about the Boss they think he’s very pretty, but his hair should be long, curled, and lightened.

Dame Magda gets down to business. What did the Lieutenant eat and drink today? I answer rations before the hunt, water during the day, and tea when we came back. She seems to relax a little.

She asks why the Lieutenant shoulder patches are different than the rest of us. I tell her that the patches indicate that he is assigned to a battlestar and that he is the ships top viper pilot. I also say that her tribe will be bombed from the sky if anything happens to him.

Apparently unimpressed with the firepower of a battlestar, she wants to know what the Lieutenant class ring means. I tell her. So the Lieutenant does not have a mate. I don’t know. I’ve only heard him mention a mother and a brother. Dame Magda is finished with me; she signals that I be removed. I let them know that they need to take care of the Lieutenant. They need to let our Medic see him. Let me put his uniform back on or he’ll freeze!”

Dame Magda laughs and says, “I promise you, I’ll keep him warm.”

“As they toss me back into the cellar, Seer decides to tell me what’s happening. The tea the Lt drank was made from kava root. Dame Magda likes hers strong. The tea relaxes a dame but it is also used to sedate children. The Lieutenant reacted to it like a child. He will recover: he needs to sleep for six or eight hours. I make clear that it is our job to take care of him.

Seer says that Dame Magda has claimed him. The Lt has attracted the attention of several of the Dames. Blue eyes and a light complexion are rarities among the tribes and are considered beautiful. The Lieutenant’s position as leader of the Rangers, plus his skill as a hunter and a warrior make him a desirable mate. As Chief Dame, she has first right to males not under the protection of a tribal Dame. If she chooses not to claim such a male, and more than one other Dame is interested in him: Dame Magda must determine who gets him. She has decided to exercise her privilege as leader of her people.

The next day we are told that we are under the protection of Dame Magda. We are heavily guarded but well fed. We get ale with supper. After seven days we are told to clean up, given a huge breakfast and released. The Boss is dressed and ready to go. I ask how he is. As usual he’s fine. He says that we are leaving now. He’s limping and has a small bite mark on his neck, but he seems okay. But he won’t tell me a thing. He didn’t tell us about his feet until we reached the truck. His feet are a mess. All he’ll tell us is that he did it walking across rocky terrain. I know he won’t tell anyone about his close calls. I feel like I’ve let everyone down. The rest of the team feels the same we decide to keep “the pole fight” and “Magda” to ourselves.

“Seven days is a long time between the sheets, but it paid off. We were able to work things out with the hill tribes after that first trip. Even the foot injury had an upside, the Boss had to stay close to the base for three weeks” Mott says.

“Mott, you don’t understand. He didn’t have any choice. They drugged him. He was physically helpless. They probably forced him barefoot on sharp rocks so he couldn’t escape. I let them take him and the team prisoners. I was told Magda would use our safety to extort sex from him. Magda’s so big she doesn’t even look like a woman and she’s got all these tats on her face. He could have been killed. Being mauled by Magda day after day is probably worse than death. I should have protected him.”

“Stan, you’re home. She let him go. She let you go. We got an ally. He took care of the situation. He earned the respect of those people. Not something given to victims. I don’t think we know everything that happened. We can’t figure him out. But he got us out of there, just leave at that.” Mott advises Stan.

The Commander and I just look at each other. I wonder how much can possibly be true. I remember that Lee blushed when a mentioned Amazons. Oh my.

It’s time to wake Zakk up. So we don’t discuss Lee and his Amazon girl friend.

Lee is waiting when we land. He has a large coffee for each of us and a box of doughnuts.

I was very glad to see Lee and coffee.

Chapter 7

It’s a three-hour drive from the airport to Claw Lake. Lee has a four wheel-drive vehicle, which has plenty of room for the four of us plus cargo space. I’m looking at Lee’s neck for bite marks, so I miss something. There’s obviously tension between the Commander and Lee.

Lee says, “I’ll drive until we’re past the morning rush hour traffic. It’s Kara’s first trip to the lake, Kara and Zak should both be in front. Kara gets the best view and Zak can point out the sights to her. Zak or Kara should drive the rest of the way. ”

Did Lee just tell the Commander that he wasn’t driving? Or is it Lee being thoughtful? Zak seems happy with the plan. The Commander gets into the front passenger seat without comment. It’s a nice day and the countryside is beautiful. Zak and I take turns driving most of the way. I enjoy driving and the view from the front seat.

The four of us stop at a grocery store. Lee takes a cart and starts quickly selecting what appear to be basics. Zak gets beer, charcoal, and some cookies. Lee asks the Commander to pick out some wine. The Commander puts some gourmet coffee in the cart.

“Kara, is there anything you want?” Lee asks.

“Uhum, I’m not sure what you mean?” I reply.

“It’s a twenty minute drive from the house to the nearest store, so we stock up. If there is something you usually eat or you want like your own brand of shampoo, you should get it and put it in the cart,” Lee says.

“Okay,” I say. Growing up in foster homes and being in the military, I’m not used to being invited to choose what I want. I can’t think of anything I need. Suddenly I remember wanting these tiny chocolate bars when I was a kid and went to the store with a foster mother. My foster mother always said “no.” I find the candy and take three bags of mixed chocolate bars.

“I’ll take these,” I say looking defiantly at Lee and tossing the bags in the cart.

Lee just nods and says, “Anything else?”

At the check out, both Lee and the Commander are set to pay. Lee acquiesces.

Lee and Zak load the car. They have done that before.

When we arrive, Lee goes to unlock the house and turn on the power and water. Zak starts to unload. Zak hands bags to his dad and me. Lee puts away the groceries as they come in. Zak makes sure everything gets in.

Zak gives me a tour of the place. The Commander tags along. Zak is very proud of the house and the improvements that have been made. The house belonged to Zak and Lees, Great Aunt Lena. Aunt Lena and Lee had made improvements over the years.

The changes included: a new kitchen, opening up the living room, dining room, and kitchen into one open space, a first floor bedroom, and bath and the conversion of the garage into a separate two bedroom house. These changes made it possible for Aunt Lena to live in her own home as she aged and could no longer take care of herself.

Aunt Lena died about two years ago. The house now belongs to Lee. Lee has made changes that make the house “less old lady”: no flowered wallpaper, no dollies, and no clutter. Now Zak and Lee each have their own rooms with full size beds.

As we go through the house the Commander misses a number of things. Lee didn’t want the old library table, the sea chest, his favorite rug or the bedroom set that had come from the Adama family. The Commander makes a comment about having been expunged and that his coming was a mistake.

“Dad, we want you. Let’s look at the guest house.” Zak says.

Zak leads us quickly to the guesthouse. As we enter this cute little house the Commander’s mood changes completely. The missing items are here. The house has been set up for his use. The old library table is in front of a widow set up as a desk with a chair and the sea chest close by to hold the Commander’s star charts. The Commander’s favorite chair and rug are also in the living area. The Adama family bedroom set is in the larger bedroom. The Commander looks at the books with an approving smile. Although Lena was Selena’s aunt, Adama had been very fond of her. Adama’s fondest memories of family life occurred in the main house. He hasn’t visited since Lee entered the Military University at Sparta, Caprica.

“How? When?” the Commander asks.

“When Lee reorganized the house, he moved Mom downstairs. Now that we didn’t need a housekeeper for Aunt Lena, Lee thought you might come if you had your own space. We don’t want you to hide out here. I helped him paint and move stuff,” Zak says, taking joy in being the one to surprise his dad.

“Thank you, son,” Adama says and gives Zak a big hug. Zak enthusiastically return his dad’s embrace.

As we enter the kitchen, we see that Lee has a knife in his hand, chopping busily.

“Did you like the tour?” Lee asks.

“Yah, nice place,” I reply.

“It’s perfect,” Adama says smiling.

Lee smiles and says to Zak, “What about something to drink?”

Zak responds to the cue by playing host and getting beers for the four of us.

The Commander looks uneasy as he sees Lee with a beer. “I didn’t know you liked beer.”

“I do,” Lee replies.

We hear Selena’s car pull in. Lee is closest to the door. He greets his mom with a quick kiss on the forehead. Lee unloads Selena’s car. Selena kisses Adama on the cheek. Zak and I are both hugged and kissed.

Lee has made a couple trips back and forth to Selena’s car. When he finishes he captures his mother’s attention.

“What are you up to? Sweetie,” She asks.

“Thought I’d get a start on supper, Mom. What can I get you to drink?” Lee asks.

“Wine would be nice, if we have it, or a beer” Selena replies.

“Dad bought both red and white. I plan on grilling sausages. Do you want red?” Lee asks.

“Yes please,” Selena says. “Where are you with dinner? What needs to be done?”

“I’ve finished a bean salad and a pear-blue cheese salad. The coals are heating up. We got cooked prawns and cocktail sauce at the store. Now that you’re here we should get that out. We got some cashews too. We need to set the table, put out bread, butter, and mustard to go with the sausages. I need to put the sausages on the grill about 30 minutes before we eat,” Lee says as he gets Selena a glass of wine.

“Baby, you’ve done too much,” Selena says as she rubs Lees arm. “Sit down, and I’ll get the prawns and the nuts. Zak, you need to set the table. Kara can you cut some bread to sausage lengths?”

Zak and I have been called into service. Lee sits down. Adama and Lee are served pawn cocktail by Selena. Zak and I make several swings by the seating area to get prawns or nuts. Selena starts talking about how tired and thin Lee looks. Lee asks Selena about her day, and her drive. The Commander comments on how nice the house looks. Zak and I have gotten a second round of beers. Lee goes out to the grill with a selection of sausages.

We follow Lee out to the grill. Lee notices that Adama doesn’t have a drink. Lee flashes a funny smile to Zak the next time Zak takes a drink of beer. It takes a second funny smile to Zak, before Zak plays the host again. Selena and the Commander will have wine. Lee would like water.

I’m surprised how good dinner is. Lee seemed to be just cutting things up. The bean salad has chickpeas, parsley, cucumbers, tomatoes, scallions and some kind of dressing. The pear salad had greens, pears, walnuts and blue cheese. I’ve never had ether before but they are good. There are a couple different kinds of sausages. Grilled over coals with fresh bread. It’s a very nice meal. For desert, there are ice cream and cookies.

Lee can cook. It’s Lee’s house. Lee is a momma’s boy.

Lee goes out to check on the grill.

Zak starts clearing the table. I want to be with him so I pitch in. I ask Zak if he can cook. He answers, “ No, my skill is eating.” Zak sets tables and washes dishes if asked. How come Lee can cook? Mom works. It’s much easier for her if someone gets things started. The brothers Adama would get awful hungry waiting for supper, so Lee helps.

After all of us have been settled in the living room, Lee jumps up and says, “I forgot. I have presents.” He goes upstairs.

He has two flat packages. He gives one to Zak and one to the Commander.

Lee has given each a matched pair of hand woven tribal bags. After Zak and the Commander have opened their gifts, Lee hands his mother a small box.

He opens his left hand, and to his great surprise he has a second box. “Oh Kara, I guess this is for you,” Lee says.

I’ve got a present. It’s for me. I’ve got a present. It’s mine. I open it up. It’s a Myra Dawn star amethyst. It’s square cut dark purple stone with white star in the center. It’s got a simple setting and a thin gold chain. I don’t wear jewelry, but Lee must have bought it for me. He must really be okay that Zak and I are together. I’m happy even if it’s a dumb present.

Selena also has a Star Amethyst. Hers is larger, with a lighter stone almost lavender. There is a double star burst one purple and one white.

Selena is more than happy. She’s motioning for the Commander to help her put it on. She’s kissing Lee and saying thanks. Making it hard for the Commander to help her.

“Kara put yours on, let’s go see how we look,” she says to me like a kid.

Zak helps me put the dumb thing on. Selena takes my hand and leads me into her room to admire our loot. Selena is smiling at me as we look at ourselves in the mirror. She is going on about how she will wear her necklace with dark colored clothes. She tells me mine will look great with a low-neck line, open collar or light colored sweater. I smile back at her. It doesn’t go with my uniform. Wonder if I should offer to give Selena my necklace. I decide that I’ll keep it because I haven’t gotten that many presents. It’s small so it’s no trouble to keep.

Lee says goodnight and he’s sorry for causing us worry to about him. After he heads up to bed, we talk about him. He’s eating okay. He isn’t resting. Selena and Zak don’t think he’s smiling or talking enough. We watch the late night news. After about thirty minutes Selena leaves for about ten minutes to say goodnight to Lee.

When we are ready to turn in, Selena makes a point of saying goodnight to Zak before he goes upstairs. When we get up stairs Zak tells me it’s the first time he ever remembers his mother not tucking him in. Zak looks sad. Suddenly he perks up, “She wants to give us privacy,” he announces.

Later I lie in bed and watch the way the light plays off my necklace. I’m eating mini chocolate bars. Zak is telling me that he wishes that we grew up together. That way Zak could have shared Lee with me. I’d have a great brother, and the three of us would have had a great time.

I tell him that I don’t know if I want a fragile sickly brother. I leave out, but think bossy arrogant “Sparta Boy.”

Well I‘m told in no uncertain terms that I’m selfish and mean. Lee is not sickly. Yes, Lee needs to be protected. But Lee has always looks out for Zak.

After a quiet minute or two, Zak starts to stroke and kiss my legs. I know where this is heading. I get up. I pick up my chocolate and my necklace. Put the chocolate bars back in their bag and put that bag into a storage bag I got from the kitchen. I put the double-bagged chocolate at the bottom of my duffle bag so Zak won’t be too tempted. I put the necklace in its tiny box. I put the box in a zippered sandwich bag. I stow it in the zippered compartment on the inside of my duffle. I pull off my tee shirt so Zak can see I have on a silky tank and matching panties. I toss the tee at Zak and jump to the other side of the bed. Zak and I usually share a bunk. Home improvements can be good.

Chapter 8

The next morning Zak and I come down stairs to the smell fresh of coffee. The table is set. Lee is making berry pancakes. We help ourselves to coffee.

Lee says “Good Morning.” Zak returns his greeting with a smile.

Lee looks different this morning. His hair is a soft medium brown cap with red and gold high lights. I say, “Hi Sparta Boy, run out of Extra Rigid Hair Gel?”

“No, I went for a swim earlier. I’ve been using extra hold, might try something new,” Lee replies.

Selena comes out of her room. She’s wearing a black tee shirt and white shorts. She has on her new necklace. She goes to Lee to show him she’s wearing his gift and gives him a kiss on the cheek. Selena takes a cup of tea. She says good morning to me. She gives Zak a kiss and asks how Handsome is this morning.

The Commander is on the deck with a cup of coffee.

Lee puts a platter of pancakes on the table. We all come to the table. The pancakes are much better than military fare. We find fruit juice and bacon on the table.

I pick up a piece of bacon and say, “It’s rigid. Sparta Boy must have cooked it.”

Zak, Selena and the Commander become tense.

Smiling, Lee picks up a piece of bacon in his hand and takes a bite. He says, “No, it’s crisp.”

I can feel everyone relax.

Zak and I have finished our pancakes quickly, too quickly. We want more. The platter is empty. We wait while the slow pokes Lee and Selena eat. The Commander has finished too.

He walks into the kitchen and says from the coffee maker and teapot, “More coffee or tea?”

In unison we all say, “Yes, Please.”

The Commander brings his cup, cream, sugar, coffee carafe, and teapot to the table on a tray. He offers the tea to Selena and then Lee. Zak pours the Commander, himself and me more coffee.

“Are there any more pancakes?” Zak asks.

“There is more batter. How many would you like?” Lee replies.

Zak says, “Three”. I say, “Two”. Adama says “Two”. Selena says, “I’m fine, Sweetie.”

Lee gets up to fill our orders. We enjoy our coffee while we wait for our seconds. Lee returns to the table with our pancakes. Seconds disappear quickly. Selena, Lee, Zak and I clear the table. The Commander refills the coffee maker and starts water for more tea.

Suddenly, it hits me. Lee is supposed to be on medical leave. We’ve all taken time off to help him rest and relax.

“Lee, what would we be eating if you weren’t on medical leave?” I ask sweetly.

“I’d have left it at coffee and tea. I’d want to be outside before the rain starts. But I need to gain weight and everyone likes breakfast,” Lee replies.

“How much weight did you lose?” the Commander asks.

“Twenty-seven pounds, but I’ve gained back five before I started my leave,” Lee replies nervously.

“Was it cold on Myra Dawn?” Zak asks.

“Lords, yes,” Lee replies.

“Lee, I think you should take a little nap.” Selena says.

“Mom, I’m not sick. I’ll take a nap after the rain starts,” Lee says quietly.

“How long do we have before he rain starts?” Zak asks.

“Less than an hour. We should bring in some dry wood. I’m going to prune the cherry trees by the cottage.” Lee says.

“Zak, Take care of the wood. I’ll be with Lee,” the Commander says.

Forty-five minutes later it starts to pour. We are drinking coffee. There’s wood set in the fireplace and a neat stack of dry wood on the porch for later. The kitchen and the dining area are clean. Lee has finished with what ever he wanted to do with the trees. As promised Lee goes upstairs to nap.

I wonder what we’re all going to do. I used to keeping busy. Hanging around the house, even one as nice as this, just isn’t my thing. But it’s Zak’s family so I don’t say anything.

The Commander says, “Selena, I could take you, Zak, and Kara to lunch. We could go to that place you like by the mall. You could do some shopping after we finish.”

“That a nice thought Will, but Lee just went upstairs. I don’t want him to feel left out,” Selena replies.

“It’s his idea. The sooner we go. The sooner we get back,” the Commander says smiling and showing Selena that he has the keys to Lee’s vehicle like it was a prize.

After some mild protests, a little persuasion from Zak and a change of clothing, Selena is ready to go. The restaurant mall is an hour drive from the lake. The restaurant specializes in steaks and fish. We have another great meal. The Mall is typical of affluent colonial living offering a food court, a couple of large department stores, specialty stores including book, music, clothing, jewelry, furniture, camping, and electronics. The Mall has an antique carousel to draw families with young children.

We start out in one of the large department stores. I stick with Zak, so we head straight for the men’s department. One of the clerk’s remembers Zak. An hour later, there is a huge pile of men’s clothing: jeans, slacks, shorts, shirts, tees, swimsuits and sweaters. I know Zak likes clothes but this is ridiculous. Selena arrives with the Commander. He is carrying two large bags. Selena wants to know what her handsome talented son has found.

Before Zak can update his mother, the Commander manages a strategic withdrawal for himself and me. We will meet the power shoppers in two hours at a coffee shop by the carousel. After a stop at the bookstore, the Commander and I head for the coffee shop.

The Commander waits until we are comfortably seated at a table and each have a cup of coffee before he starts.

“Starbuck are you aware that you are calling Lee names in front of his mother?” he begins.

“Sorry Sir, I slipped, but he did go to Sparta,” I reply.

“What about Lieutenant Adamant, Boss Man, or Tough Ass?” the Commander asks raising an eyebrow.

“I don’t remember saying those things when Selena was in the room, but I call Lee things like that all the time. Lee’s used to it,” I reply.

“Yes, I’m sure he is and much worse from those who don’t like him. It isn’t easy for either Zak or Lee having a famous father in the military. There is always the suspicion of privilege. Because Lee always distinguishes himself at what ever he takes on, envy fuels the flame so the name-calling and rumors never stop. I can’t do anything for the boys but Selena, doesn’t need to be reminded,” the Commander says.

“I’ll try to stop. Do you think she’s upset with me?” I ask.

“I think Lee defused the situation this morning,” the Commander replies.

“Commander, Lee would cause a buzz without a famous father. He’s made full Lieutenant two years early. His classmates gave him a hard time, but they plan on saluting him for the rest of their careers. The people who work with him respect him. You don’t have to worry unless you buy into Zak’s view of Lee as a shy sensitive academic,” I say trying to make the Commander less responsible about the flak Lee puts up with.

“Thank you, Kara. I appreciate you trying to let me off the hook. Zak’s not wrong about Lee. Lee hides his shy sensitive side. Sparta recruited Lee for academics not leadership or his flying skills. Lee uses formal military courtesy to protect himself from the cruelties of military life,” the Commander confides.

“What do you mean Sparta recruited Lee? Sparta picks and chooses? Sparta doesn’t recruit,” I challenge.

“Sparta does pick and choose among the colonies top five percent of secondary students. Sparta also has a confidential program to recruit a select group of candidates based on perfect college entrance exams, and perfect scores on physics, calculus, probability, and quantum theory advanced placement tests. Sparta is searching for scientific talent. Sparta identifies, investigates, and gets approval from the Counsel of Twelve to recruit these students with known discrepancies from standard admission requirements. Lee was one of these students. He entered the academy at sixteen with a wavers for age and weight.”

“Lee was presented with an opportunity to fly vipers, if he qualified after completing a BS at Sparta. Lee was delighted to accept. His mother and her Aunt Lena thought that weekly plane tickets home and a large long distance phone bill were worth Lee’s happiness. They didn’t understand that the military would control Lee’s life even as a cadet.”

“Sparta’s staff expected academic excellence from Lee. They expected Lee’s youth and size to make the leadership and physical requirements for pilot extremely difficult to achieve. Lee was to be put on a scientific track. At the time, I didn’t realize how important Lee’s day-to-day presence was to Zak, and his mother. I have to live with the pain my inaction caused,” the Commander finishes this surprising story with a sigh.

“But Lee is a viper pilot,” I protest. I want to make the Commander feel better.

“Yes, Lee’s determination and courage were not in the original equation. The Cadet Captain and top ranked student gets to pick his area of service. Tradition allowed Lee to fly in spite of the military’s plans,” the Commander smiles and shakes his head.

“Sir, Lee will be okay,” I try to reassure him.

“Yes, but without the support he deserved,” the Commander says with resignation.

Zak and Selena join us. They are loaded down with bags.

It’s almost seven when we return home. Lee is still asleep. Lee doesn’t wake up when his mother calls or when Zak calls from his bedside. The Commander won’t let us touch him. He doesn’t want to chance a violent reaction from Lee. Lee has crashed. I’d just let him sleep it off.

Selena starts supper. She just can’t let Lee sleep. Lee needs to eat. What if something’s wrong? She hasn’t gotten to talk to him today. Has he moved?

When Zak catches his mother’s anxiety, I decide to get Lee on his feet. Zak and I stand away from the bed and away from the door. In my best military voice I command, “Adama on your feet.” Well he’s on his feet, startled but ready for action. “Lee, your mom needs you downstairs,” I say to give him direction. He’s on his way fast. Luckily, Lee is wearing a tank top and sweat pants. He isn’t fully awake.

“Mom, Mom, what’s wrong? What do you need?” Lee says clearly worried.

“Everything’s fine Baby. You need to wake up to eat,” His mother says as she puts her arms around him to comfort him. Lee sleepily returns his mother’s hugs and kisses.

“Go sit down in the living room. What would you like?” Selena asks.

“I’d like to throw Starbuck in the lake,” Lee grumbles as he turns toward the stairs.

“Where do you think you’re going?” the Commander asks.

“Upstairs to get some clothes. Is that a problem?” Lee retorts in a challenging tone.

“Lee, you are over tired. Go sit down,” Selena orders. “Zak, go upstairs and get your brother a sweater, shoes and socks.”

Lee goes into the living room, sits on the sofa, and pouts, like a little kid. He isn’t getting his way. I’m going to go tease him. I get myself a beer, and then head for the sofa.

“Woken up from your much needed beauty sleep?” I ask, as I take a seat.

“Heh?” I almost yell. Lee’s fast. He’s taken my beer. I didn’t see him coming. I would have expected it from Zak. Lee is being rude.

“Thank you.” Lee says smiling before he takes his first drink.

As I head back to the kitchen to get another beer I ask, “Can I get you anything?”

“What did you have in mind?” He replies with a smirk.

“How about a nice shiner, to go with your spoiled brat attitude?” I ask turning to attack.

Lee has pulled his knees up to his chin, and put his hand up in an exaggerated defensive position. “No thank you, Please, No!” he pleads trying not to laugh.

I get him under both arms and tickle him until he’s on the floor. Zak joins me. We are all laughing.

Lee says, “It’s Zak’s turn.” Suddenly Lee has Zak pinned. I can’t resist I tickle Zak until he can’t laugh anymore. I jump clear of Zak. Lee breaks the hold and gets back on the sofa.

Lee has just played. I didn’t know he could.

Selena and the Commander are smiling.

Lee puts on the sweater that Zak brought down for him. He retrieves his, no my beer from under the end table. I put out my hand and he returns the bottle to me.

“Be good children. Lee, I’ll bring you your own beer,” Zak says in a stern tone wagging his finger at us.

“Don’t bother, I’m going to help with dinner. I’ll get my own,” Lee says rising.

“No, Lee, I don’t want you in the kitchen. You stay there and rest,” Selena says. “You need to pace yourself. I was very concerned that you didn’t wake up.”

“Zak, come get your brother a beer. Kara, watch Lee. Entertain each other gently,” Selena continues.

Zak is in charge of cheese and crackers and providing Lee, and me with beverages. The Commander is handling the wine, coffee and tea. I’m setting the table and will help serve. Selena is cooking.

Lee is to entertain me gently, eat and drink to his mother’s satisfaction, and then be his mother’s sweet attentive baby while the rest of us cleanup. Judging from his body language as he reaches for shoes and socks, he thinks it’s tough duty.

“The weather should be clear by morning Kara, and should stay good for at least three days. We have a small sailboat and a canoe. Zak is a fine sailor. Do you like to sail?” Lee asks.

I tell him I don’t know. I haven’t been before. Lee assures me that I’ll have a good opportunity to decide.

“What’s up with the scars on your feet?” I ask noticing that he has several fresh scars on both feet.

“Oh, Resolutes’s Life Station did cosmetic surgery on scars I got from running across rocky terrain. Long term there won’t be any scars.” Lee replies. “Please let it drop,” He whispers.

Too late, the Commander heard. He moves with surprising speed. Suddenly he is grabbing one foot. Lee jerks away from his father and Zak who is trying to take the second foot. “Let me go!” Lee says, “I don’t want to be handled.”

“Explain how you injured your feet,” the Commander barks.

Lee jumps to his feet and replies, “Sir, Two adolescent girls tipped a raft. I was the only one who could swim. I had to go after them. The girls are okay, Sir.”

“Son, How long before you could wear shoes?” the Commander asks in a much quieter voice.

“Six days, Sir,” Lee answers without affect.

“Sit down, Son, you did what had to be done,” the Commander says with gentle voice.

Lee sits but isn’t looking at any of us. His shoelaces have his complete attention. He then goes and lights the fire that was set in the morning. He’s looking at the fire. Zak leaves Lee’s beer on the hearth where Lee can see it. Lee looks at the fire and sips his beer until he is called to the table.

After everyone is served, Lee decides he’s speaking to us, “You want to know what happen to me on Myra Dawn. The mission is classified, but I can tell you about my health. The cuts and bruises on my feet and a couple of bruised ribs were my only injuries requiring treatment. The marks you can see on my feet are from cosmetic surgery to remove scars. I’m fine. Nothing hurts and everything works.” Lee pauses and looks at each of us. Everyone is quiet.

“I lost weight, but I didn’t starve. I ate everyday usually twice. We were stranded we had to ration. With the cold and long hours, it wasn’t enough so I lost weight gradually. I haven’t been thin long. I lost fat not lean mass. After vacationing like this, I’ll need to go on a diet,” Lee pauses smiling.

“I hate the cold and it was very cold. But I had been equipped with the latest cold weather gear including an excellent sleeping bag. The buildings we used for a base didn’t have central heat, but we had wood,” Lee stops once more. You can see he feels cold just thinking about it.

“I was with Marine Rangers and I fought with them. The Rangers protected me. Mom, one of the senior master chiefs would check to make sure my body armor and helmet were on properly every time I went out. They were as careful about it as you are with my using sunscreen. I was always assigned a couple of guards. No Matter what orders I gave, I had shadows. So it wasn’t as dangerous as you might think,” Lee finishes with “It’s over. I safe. I’m home.”

The Commander has taken off his glasses. He is looking down. He can’t seem to get his glasses clean.

Selena says, “Thank you, it helps to know.”

Zak breaks the tension, “So I shouldn’t add Myra Dawn to my vacation plans?”

I giggle. Lee smiles and shakes his head.

Zak changes the topic. He describes the clothes he bought.

Selena bought herself a purple pants suit to go with her new necklace.

Lee rubs his eyes.

“Sweetie, we woke you up so you could eat. If you’re finished eating, you can go back to bed if you’re tired,” Selena says.

Lee says his good nights and makes his escape.

“He volunteered information about what happen to him. It’s a start. He has always been very protective of Zak and me. So we can’t be surprised that he tried to minimize what happened to him,” Selena begins.

“Will, combined with what you told me. I am assuming you have told Zak and Kara at least as much,” Selena gives each of us a challenging look. “This is what Lee has told us. He was commanding Marine Rangers in combat. He was personally targeted for death. While saving two girls from drowning he injured both his feet. The injury was severe enough to require reconstructive surgery. While he was unable to walk, his life was in extreme danger. He never ate more than two meals a day. He was always in danger, always cold, slowly starving, and always tired from overwork. What he did not say but I assume, he was afraid and forced to kill. Have I missed anything?”

Selena question is met with silence. I figure Zak had accepted his dad’s assurance that Lee would be okay and had not thought about Lee’s suffering further until now. I’m a big believer in the brutal truth, but Selena assessment of what Lee had suffered was shocking and I’m just a friend. I can’t imagine what she felt. This happened to her “sweet baby”. I know the Commander could add a couple of things, but his glasses are off again. So I figure completeness isn’t necessary.

“Will, I know he asked you to take us to lunch. Lee picked a place that he knew would take all day. I had a very nice time. But leaving him alone was a mistake. No more long trips without him. If Lee is at the home, one of us should be here too. We can give him space if he asks for it. But the slightest suggestion that he wants company, I want him to get it,” Selena stops and looks at each of us. She is the commanding officer marshalling the troops.

“Zak, you need to think about entertaining your brother. Suggest the things you both like fishing, swimming, running, or sailing. If he wants to do something around the place, help him. Or just hang out.”

“Will, I want you to watch your tone. I don’t want him jumping to your command. I don’t want to be reminded or have him reminded that he is a soldier.”

“Kara, I’m sorry if you and Zak don’t have as much time together as you would like. I don’t know what Lee might have done to offend you, but I would be grateful if you could put it aside and be gentle toward Lee,” Selena has finished giving orders.

“Selena, Lee has always treated my well. I’m just in the habit of teasing him. I’ll lay off for a while,” I reply.

“Selena, why don’t you go say goodnight to Lee? We’ll start to clean up,” the Commander says.

She takes the Commander up on his suggestion. By the time she comes down stairs we have finished cleaning up. The tea and coffee is about ready.

Selena has bought an apple strudel for desert. She warns us that we need to save a piece for Lee. The spoiled brat gets to eat his for breakfast.

Selena also brings out some handsome crystal glasses and some very fine Ambrosia. Lee suggested that we might like it because it is a rainy night. Selena says that toward the end of Aunt Lena’s life a single glass of ambrosia a day was one of her few remaining pleasures. Lee made sure she drank a fine vintage.

It’s been a very long day. Zak holds me very close while we sleep.

Chapter 9

“Hi Dad, thanks for making the coffee and tea,” Lee says as he joins me on the dock.

“Good morning Lee, You’re welcome. How do you feel this morning?” I ask.

“I’m feeling more rested,” Lee says. “The lake is always beautiful early in the morning.”

“Yes, I’ve missed it. The cottage is very comfortable. Zak told me it was your idea to make a space for me. Thank you,” I say.

“I’m glad you’re comfortable. With three of us and soon four in the service, getting together is a problem. I hope a place with space for each of us will help,” Lee replies.

I know I’ve received a major peace offering from my son. We have never addressed any of the issues that occur between father and son. We never talked about the divorce. I know Lee felt abandoned and guilty about his parents divorce. Lee felt his early developmental issues put too much pressure on me.

My timing has always been off when it came to Lee. I made it to Zak’s secondary and college graduations, but not to Lee’s graduation from Sparta. I missed a now famous air show performed by Apollo and Starbuck, when they graduated from advanced flight training. The aurora maneuver demonstrated the new maneuvering system allowed a viper with the right pilots to operate with 99.97% accuracy. Lee talked the manufacture into providing gasses and a computer ignition system for the vipers. The result was a translucent, three-dimensional sphere with precise colors matching a famous gem that was on display at the time at a local museum. Both Apollo and Starbuck got a lot of attention for the stunt.

It seemed out of character for Lee. Lee doesn’t like to call attention to himself. Lee already had a posting to a Battlestar. I read Starbucks record when she and Zak became engaged. I realized her behavior problems had gotten he a job ferrying vipers on Picon. The stunt showed that Starbuck could work in a precise highly coordinated way with another pilot. Starbuck was reassigned to be a junior instructor at the flight academy as a reward. I’ve wondered if Lee was trying to improve Starbuck assignment.

Lee is an adult, a respected officer and a viper pilot. Commander and junior officer relationship is comfortable for me. We both know the rules. I love my complicated elder son, but have no idea how to connect with him. I realize there has been an uncomfortably long silence.

“I’m going for a swim. Do you want to join me?” Lee asks.

“I really don’t swim much any more,” I reply. Without my glasses I only sees colors and shapes. I could easily become disoriented swimming in open water.

“I’ll stick with you. We have privacy. Sure you don’t want to give it a try?” Lee says.

“Put like that, how can I refuse? Are you up for a swim to the point?” I ask. Of course Lee knows about my vision. The last time we spent more than a month together was during my recovery from the injuries that ended my career as a viper pilot and CAG. Without Lee’s support and help that summer, I might have had to retire from the service. I wonder if I thanked my then thirteen-year-old son properly.

“Sure it’s my favorite swim,” Lee says as he dives in. He treads water while I remove my sandals and shirt.

Lee lets me set the pace. He swims at my side. He maintains a distance of two to three arms lengths between them. I’m very comfortable with this. I know where Lee is. But we are far enough apart so we don’t collide. When we reach the point we rest briefly and return. We enjoy our swim. But we only spoke at the point and when Lee informed me of the distance and directions. When we are out of the water, Lee tells me that he is heading for the house. Lee hopes to find a piece of strudel. Another cup of coffee sounds good to me.

Lee finds a generous size piece of strudel. He cuts several slices cheese to top the strudel and pops it in the microwave to melt the cheese. He makes two servings and joins me on the deck. I enjoy this surprise and unconventional breakfast.

As I get myself another cup of coffee, I notice that Lee has picked up the kitchen. Returning to the deck I see Lee carrying life vests to the dock. Selena is right, Lee needs to pace himself. Selena and Zak need to handle this. I’ve enjoyed this morning with Lee too much to risk upsetting him now.

“Selena, please, you need to get Lee to slow down,” I say as I knock on my ex-wife’s door. Issuing orders is much more efficient. “Zak, Starbuck get your lazy butts down here now,” I bark.

Selena comes out of her room wearing a robe. “Will, what’s Lee doing?”

“We went for a swim to the point. He fixed us strudel and cheese. He picked up the kitchen. Now he’s moving boating equipment to the dock. At this rate he’ll be exhausted before you’re dressed,” I say.

“Will, why can’t you just ask him to stop?” She asks.

“Lee will hear an order or an accusation if it’s from me. You forbad me from ordering him just last night don’t you remember?” I reply. It’s been awhile since I’ve felt so frustrated. Selena in her robe seems to have addled my brain.

Zak and Kara come down stairs. They are dressed in shorts and tee shirts.

“Lee is working too hard, go get the boats in the water,” I order.

“Dad can’t we have breakfast first?” Zak asks.

“Will, go down and tell Lee that I want to make strawberry shortcake. I’ll need strawberries, whipping cream, and biscuit mix. Tell him I feel a bit tired. Could he go shopping for me now so I won’t miss the warmest part of the day by the lake? Go with him and stop for tea and coffee. The rest of us will be organized by the time you get back. Lee likes strawberry shortcake and he likes to help,” Selena says smiling.

“Okay, Strawberry shortcake, strawberries, whipping cream and biscuit mix. You’ll handle him when we get back? I say as I head out.

“Lee, we have to get stuff for strawberry shortcake. Um um, strawberries, cream and biscuit mix. We need to go now to help out your mother,” I say as I approach my son.

Lee raises an eyebrow as he listens to me. “Okay Dad, I need to change. How about I come by your place in fifteen minutes?” Lee replies.

“Good, we go in fifteen from the cottage,” I say as I heads toward my cottage. I need to change my clothes too.

Lee has the keys to his mother’s sports car when he comes to the cottage. His is freshly showered and dressed in jeans and black tee shirt. I’m wearing chinos and a tan shirt.

“Dad, Would you like to drive?” Lee asks.

“Sure, I can drive,” I say, but think, what a silly question, of course I want to drive that fine machine.

Once on the road, Lee says, “Sir, I know you’ve been given a diversionary mission by Mom. I am willing to be diverted. What is the desired result?”

After I finish laughing I reply, “You are to slow down. We shop. I drink coffee. You drink tea. We’re gone long enough for the sleepy heads to get themselves together.”

“Fine, I would like to stop at the flower shop, if it fits into the plan,” Lee replies.

We spend the rest of the trip talking about the car. It’s handling, features, and what other models were considered.

We buy groceries. I’m happy Lee was listening because I’ve forgotten what Selena needed. Lee knows where the coffee is good. Lee has flowers for his mother. There are no uncomfortable moments. I feel extremely relieved when we return to the house. Selena and Zak need to make sure Lee doesn’t do too much.

Selena meets us as we park the car. I see that Selena notices that I was driving.

“Good morning Mom,” Lee says as he gets out of the car. He has a large bunch of flowers.

“Hi Lee,” she says, “Thank you for going to the store. Are the flowers for me?”

“Flowers? We were supposed to get flowers? Here hold these,” he says handing the flowers to his mother. He feels his pockets and looks back in the car pretending to look for flowers. His mother giggles. “Thank you,” Selena says.

“Your welcome, the strawberries Dad bought look good,” Lee says.

“Thanks Will. How do you like my car?” Selena asks.

“Selena, it’s a pleasure to drive,” I reply. It’s nine forty five. You can add shop, make sure the old man can handle the sports car, and make his mom feel special to Lees list of activities.

“Why don’t you come in, I have a couple of things for Lee.” Selena says.

We follow her into the living room. Laid out on the coffee table and the sofa are an assortment of civilian casual clothes. Selena and Zak have bought Lee new clothes for his leave. Lee has new sweats, running shorts, bathing suits, several tee shirts, jeans, khaki shorts, chinos, shirts, and a sweater. There are also packages of underwear, and socks.

“Oh Mom, it’s too much. It must have taken forever to get all this?” Lee says in a very tired voice.

“Zak picked most of it out. He promises that it will all fit well, once you get back to your usual weight. You don’t have to try anything on. I really want you to wear civilian clothes when I’m with you. You are accommodating me. So let Zak and I get you a few things. Just wear what you want. Don’t worry about it. We want to make something easier for you,” Selena says.

“Thanks Mom, it’s thoughtful of you and Zak. Clothes shopping is not one of my favorite activities,” Lee says. “I think I’ll take an arm load up stairs and put on my new swim suit.” He gives his mother a hug and then goes to the sofa to start clearing the living room.

Once he gets to his room, he puts his new clothes down on one side of the bed and lays down on the other. He feels exhausted. He doesn’t want to see anyone. He can’t handle his new clothes. He takes his pillow and goes to the room he and Zak shared as children and climbs into his old bunk. In 20 to 30 minutes, he’ll feel better. He falls asleep.

Selena arranges her flowers and puts away the groceries. She sits down with a physics journal, to wait for Lee to come down stairs. When he hasn’t come down she goes up to find him. When she discovers Lee in his old bunk covered in the same quilt he used as a child, she leaves as quietly as she can. She goes to her own room to cry.

I’m impressed with the progress Zak and Starbuck have made in preparing the dock as a recreation area. The canoe is tied to the dock. Waterproof storage benches, which store life vests, cushions and spare lines. Lounge chairs, a table, four chairs, and an umbrella have been set up on a flat grass area behind the dock. The sailboat, mast with sails and rudder are by the water.

“Hi, looks like you’ve done a great job? Is their anything I can do?” I ask.

“Hi Dad, Everything except rigging up the sail boat is done. Do you know how to set it up? Lee has shown me how, but it always handles so much better if Lee does it,” Zak asks.

“I’ve done it, but your Aunt Lena always made some adjustments. Why don’t we set it up, but not launch it until Lee feels like checking it out,” I suggest.

“Sounds good, Dad,” Zak replies. “Come on Dad, Let’s do it”

I enjoy Zak’s enthusiasm as we set up the small fiberglass boat. Zak is just so much easier to deal with than Lee. He always appreciates my praise guidance and assistance.

They finish with the boat. Zak says they should go to the house get something to eat, and fill the cooler. Now that dock is set up, Mom and Lee should come down and have a good time.

When we enter the house Zak is shocked. No one has made sandwiches. No one has gotten out the beach towels. No one has gotten out the cooler. Where is his Mom? Where is Lee?

“Relax Zak your brother is probably resting. Your mother may be with him or she may be resting too. They both have a lot to deal with,” I say to reassure him.

“Maybe we could make some sandwiches?” Kara says.

Zak has wandered into the living room and see most of the clothes he and his mother bought for Lee. “Maybe Lee didn’t like the clothes. Maybe he got angry because they are trying to dress him. I didn’t get him the right clothes.”

“Zak, Lee was a little overwhelmed because you got him so much. He thanked his Mother. The last time I saw him he was on his way up stairs with a bunch of new clothes. He said he was going to put on his new bathing suit. Don’t worry Lee knows you and you mother want to help him,” I say reassuringly.

“Let’s get going on those sandwiches, Starbuck,” I say as I start rummaging around in the refrigerator.

Suddenly, Zak is running down the stairs yelling, “Dad, Kara, Lee isn’t in his room. We need to find him. Where’s Mom?”

The three of us just stand there and looking at one another.

“The cars are still outside. They must be close. Zak knock on your Mother’s door,” Kara suggests.

“Lee!” I say as I see a pair of jeans coming down the stairs.

“Hi, I fell asleep. What’s all the noise?” Lee says as he reaches the kitchen.

Selena comes out of her room. Her hair is a little messed and her eyes are red.

“What’s wrong?” she asks.

“Um, nothing, I‘m hungry and I miss you and Lee,” Zak says nervously to his mother.

“Off course you’re hungry, Handsome, Let’s get some lunch ready,” Selena says going to Zak and rubbing his arm reassuringly.

“Kara, please get some plates, Why don’t we eat at island and have do it yourself sandwiches,” Selena says as she moves to the refrigerator. She pulls out an amazing number of items, including: Cold cuts, cheese, bread, mustard, mayo, apricot jam, pickles and left over bean salad.

Lee goes to a draw and gets flatware and sets five places at the island. He moves couple of additional stools into place.

“Zak, take your brothers new things up to his room for him,” Selena asks.

Zak takes an armload and asks Starbuck to bring up the rest. Piled on Lee’s bed it’s an impressive amount of clothing to Kara. Kara decides to take a chance. “Sure is a lot of gear to stow.”

“It’s really only enough for about five or six days. It takes a couple changes each day if you are active. But it could seem like a lot to Lee. He’s been in uniform since he was sixteen and assigned to a battlestar since he finished advanced flight training.” Zak pauses, “Kara, you‘re brilliant. We need to put this stuff away.”

The Zak grabs the bags of underwear starts opening them and rolling each item for storage in military style.

Kara goes to the bed and takes a pile of tee shirts and starts to fold the in military style. “How will we know where they go?” She asks.

“Just match the item to its military counterpart and put it in the same place as you did in officers training school. Dad taught us to keep order. Lee will be able to find everything,” Zak replies.

I join them when they don’t come down. I look in Lee’s closet. I go and find hangers for the shirts and pants. I help Kara fold. Zak takes care of the hanging things. He picks one of the new bathing suits, and a tee shirt and leaves them on the bed.

When the three of us come downstairs, Lee and his mother are sitting at island. Each has a glass of lemonade. Selena has freshened up. She seems calm. Lee seems tired and sad. Lee says, “Thank you, sorry I’m just not organized.”

Zak pulls three beers out of the refrigerator. We all make our own sandwiches. The bean salad from the first night tastes even better. Lee makes himself his usual spiced ham, mustard and apricot jam sandwich. We have fruit for desert.

After lunch Selena, Zak, and Lee, clean up. Zak asks Kara to help him load the cooler with drinks. I go to change my clothes. Selena goes to get a stack of beach towels and to change into her swimsuit. Zak and Kara wait for her to return. Lee is standing in the living room looking out the window. When Selena returns Zak and Kara head for the dock with towels and cooler. Selena approaches Lee. “How are you feeling?” she asks.

Lee stands there moving his face but nothing comes out. “I feel numb, and tired. I just don’t want anyone to worry. I need to put my swim suit on,” He says.

“Lee you don’t have to do much. Remember we all love you. Not what you do for us,” Selena says quietly. “All we need is to know that you are safe and are eating. You don’t need to go out unless you feel up to it. Rest until dinner. Let us know if you decide to do some thing else.”

“Thanks Mom, I’ll change and go down to the boats for a little while,” Lee replies.

Selena is waiting when Lee comes downstairs in a few minutes. “Did you put on your sunscreen?”

“Yes, Mom,” Lee replies but sits on a chair and passively lets his mother reapply sunscreen to his face, neck, and forearms.

Lee looks nervous when he and his mother reach the dock. We’ve been waiting for him. I notice that except for the color of the swim trunks Lee and Zak are dressed alike.

He manages to say “Hi.” He comes over to me and says, “Dad, may I see your glasses.”

I hand Lee my glasses. He has an adjustable athletic sunglass strap that he connects to the glasses. Very few people still have eye problems that require glasses. Most eye problems are corrected with surgery, or contacts. Lee returns my glasses to me and then demonstrates how they work with his own strap and sunglasses. The strap hold glasses in place during athletic activity.

I’m very touched by his thoughtfulness. I give my son a brief hug. Lee seems surprised.

Kara says, “You told me there would be sailing? How about getting the boat in the water?”

“Yes Ma’am,” Lee says and heads toward the sailboat. “Looks like its pretty much ready to go.” Lee reaches into a small compartment at the stern of the boat and gets a small toolkit. He makes adjustments to the rudder, tightens the mast, and checks the sail and all the lines. He checks the ropes that tie the boat to the dock.

“Zak, let’s get the boat into the water for the lady,” Lee says as he positions himself to lift the stern of the boat. I join Lee at the stern. The three of us easily place the boat in the water.”

“Zak why don’t you take Kara for a trail run?” Lee suggests.

“Not you and me, like always?” Zak asks.

“She’s our guest. She said she wants to sail,” Lee smiles. He goes to one of the storage benches and removes two life vests. He hands on vest to Zak and the other to Kara.

Kara says, “I’m a very good swimmer, I don’t”

“Starbuck, No vest, No sailing,” Lee says quietly.

Kara pouts but puts the vest on. Zak takes her on a nice long sail. She gets a good view of the shore. Zak points out some of the sights and starts telling her some of the basics of sailing.

“What’s going on with Lee and the Commander, Lee seems uncomfortable when the Commander touches him?” Kara asks.

“Oh, Dad was worried that Mom was making Lee too clingy, so he would only hug Lee once when came home and once when he left. Dad was very strict that we were not to cry and not to complain. Lee has always followed orders better than me. Lee didn’t want Dad to think he was a sissy, so he got in the habit of acting like he didn’t care about hugging Dad and didn’t like it. Lee never got out of the habit.” Zak says.

Kara thinks be careful what you ask for especially with Apollo.

The sail comes to an end. Lee comes to the edge of the dock to help them land. He ties off he bow and then the stern. He offers Kara a hand. Zak jumps gracefully off.

Lee goes back to the table, where he has been reading physics journals. He and Selena have been talking about the latest literature. Selena is looking at the lake, the sailboat and Lee. A sail with Zak would be just too tame. She won’t ask that wouldn’t be fair to Lee. She can’t help but say, “The winds picked up a little.”

Lee looks at the tree line, the sky, and the waters surface. He smiles and puts out his hand to his mother. They put on the same life vests Zak and Kara used. They quickly leave the dock. Soon Kara, Zak, and I are watching them sail. The small boat moves with surprising speed and grace. Kara loves speed. She wants to sail like Selena and Lee. She says, “I didn’t know a little boat like that could go so fast.”

“They normally don’t. We are looking at a study in applied physics. Selena and Lee have been sailing since Lee was nine. They are willing to take the boat to the edge of its capabilities. When Lee was about twelve he’d practice capsizing and righting the boat. He can right the boat quickly in almost any conditions. Sometimes the boat sails like a slug, if too much water has gotten trapped or the sail gets soaked. But Selena and Lee always bring the boat home” I say. I hope Lee or Selena will invite me for a sail. I have more hope now that my glasses can be secured to my face.

When they return from their sail both Zak and I meet them at the dock. I tie the bow and Zak ties the stern. I help Selena to the dock. I still think that when she is laughing there is no more beautiful woman in all the Colonies.

Lee jumps to the dock and smiles at Zak saying, “Let’s get a couple of beers and go up to the old Maple tree for a few minutes.” They grab a couple of beers and head away from the dock. As Kara moves towards them I signal her no. She stays behind.

Once comfortably seated under the old tree. Lee says “Mom, told me that you picked out all my new clothes. Thanks.”

“You’re welcome. Do you like them?” Zak asks.

”Yes, they are all things I’ll wear. You did a good job on the colors,” Lee replies. “And thanks for putting them away too. Zak, I’m tired all the time, and sleep isn’t helping enough. One minute everything seems fine. The next I feel like I’m letting everyone down.”

“Don’t worry about it. You are supposed to be tired. Rest,” Zak replies.

“Thanks but with Mom, Dad and Kara here, you are going to be doing more than your share of chores,” Lee says, “Its important to both of us that Kara and Dad want to come back. I’m sorry I don’t seem to be able do my share.”

“Oh that’s okay,” Zak, says, “I’ll just make Kara help me.”

“Oh you will!” Lee replies with a smile.

“Yes, I’m so lovable and handsome, she’ll do anything to be with me.” Zak says.

Suddenly Kara is there. She straddles Zak.

“Hey, no violence and not too much mushy stuff. Remember I’m on medical leave,” Lee says rising to his feet.

“Oh, you are such a prude. Mom’s giving us privacy,” Zak retorts.

“Who do you think mentioned to her that both your bags were in one room? And let her know you two shared quarters on Picon. I didn’t want anyone to be embarrassed. She made her own decision. I told her if she was uncomfortable, I’d put you in our old room,” Lee shots back with a big smile on his face.

Kara starts kissing Zak. Lee thinks Starbuck is probably calling the shots.

Lee says, “I’m out of here, Zak, remember there are extra chores. Save some energy.”

Lee returns to the dock and checks both boats. He puts away the life vests.

“Mom, I’m going up to the house take a nap. If I have trouble sleeping I might use my old bunk. Please wake me up an hour before supper. Please don’t let Starbuck do it,” Lee says.

Lee comes down stars about an hour and a half before dinner. He is wearing a new blue shirt and tan slacks. Selena tells me she is happy with the shirt, it makes his eyes look very blue and the cut hides his thinness.

Lee joins Selena and I in an Ambrosia and tonic and offers to handle the grill. Tonight’s dinner is steak, grilled pepper and onions, potatoes, salad and strawberry short cake. Everyone lends a hand.

Zak and Kara want Selena to loan them her car. They will have to be satisfied with Lee’s. They will need to buy more food tomorrow. It’s Selena’s trip but she wants Zak or me to take her in Lee’s larger car. Lee suggests that if he and I are up earlier than everyone else, they should take another swim or take out a boat.

Lee heads up to bed first, so his mother can come and say goodnight and go to bed at a reasonable hour.

Zak and Kara talk about taking a drive on their own and sailing fast.

Chapter 10

It’s just after six when Lee and I meet in the kitchen. I make the coffee. Lee makes a pot of tea. We both have on swimsuits. So we decide repeat yesterdays swim. We both enjoy it and its still early. There isn’t much wind so we take the canoe out. It’s been a while since I’ve used a canoe, so I plan on some sore muscles later. I’m enjoying being outside with a competent responsive companion. But Lee doesn’t bring up anything personal. I’m unwilling to risk this precious time.

Lee uses the outside shower and I use the shower at the cottage. Lee dresses in shorts and a tee shirt.

Mornings are the time he feels most like himself, so Lee decides to get breakfast started.

He starts some bacon. Cuts up a couple of melons. He uses an old cast iron frying pan to make a crust less cheese pie. He uses the leftover vegetables form last night in the cheese pie. He drinks tea while he sets the table.

His mother joins him and after seeing what he has done. She decides to make Lee cinnamon toast, one of his childhood favorites. Breakfast is a relaxed affair. Now that everyone has gotten to enjoy the out side. And plans are made for today.

Selena, Zak, and Kara go food shopping. Zak and Kara plan on dropping Selena off with the groceries. Then they will explore and eat lunch out. Lee and I are going to rest. When Selena returns everyone lends a hand bring in the groceries. She has three sandwiches from a deli for lunch for the stay at home crowd. The wind comes up and Lee and his mother go for a sail. I can tell that they both enjoy the speed and excitement.

Lee has a meeting with the Landscaper to discuss plan for the property over the next year. The landscaper plants half a dozen flowering shrubs by the kitchen door.

Kara and Zak have returned. They plan on taking the sailboat for a long fast sail. Selena and Lee give them several tips on getting a good ride out of the sailboat. Lee reminds Zak to avoid a section of the lake has the submerged remnants of an old dock.

Lee heads up to the house for a nap. Shortly after Zak and Starbuck sail out of sight Lee rushes down t the dock. At the dock he sees the life vests Zak and Kara have left behind.

“Dad, I sorry but you have to help me get the canoe around the point now,” Lee says trying to keep his voice even.

“What’s wrong son?” I ask.

“The wind is too high. Zak and Kara left their life vests. We need to go now,” Lee pleads.

Lee heads for the canoe while putting on his own life vest. He tosses vests for Zak and Kara into the boat. “Dad, Put on a vest and get in. If I’m crazy I’ll apologize, but come now,” Lee insists.

“Will, just go,” Selena says.

I grab a vest, tighten my glasses in place and take a paddle. Selena helps us cast off. We head full out for the point. I’m really aware for the first time how strong Lee is. We are each paddling toward a common goal. But each of Lee strokes thrusts the canoe forward. As we reach the point Lee asks me to stop paddling. Lee is looking for a current from a river that empties into the lake. I see that Lee is going to use this current to speed our trip.

Suddenly I spot the source of Lee’s agitation. The sailboat has capsized. Zak and Kara are in the water part way to the shore. Kara seems to be trying to help Zak. Zak is caught. With the help of the current they are able to reach Zak and Kara. Lee explains the sunken danger. I balance the canoe, so Lee can enter the water. Zak’s foot has become caught. Kara has exhausted herself trying to free him. Lee gives Kara a vest and tells her to put it on. He removes his own and hands it to his brother. He fills he lungs with air and dives. Using the utility tool he frees his brother foot. Surfacing, he helps his brother put on the vest. Kara is exhausted and is simply holding on to her vest.

Lee gets Kara to put her arms thru the vest and uses it to tow her to a safe landing area. Zak follows. Zak and Kara embrace. They assure one another that they are all right. I beach the canoe and join them on small grassy area. Zak is breathing easily and he can move his foot. Kara is still breathing hard. Her hands and knees are covered with splinters and bruises at result of her desperate attempts to free Zak. I apply an antibiotic to Kara’s hands and knees.

Lee rests. He then puts on a life vest and goes to right the sailboat. He has to pull the boat around so he can use the wind to right the boat.

Lee beaches the sailboat by the canoe. He lies down to rest again. Zak hugs his brother. Lee asks how Zak and Kara are doing. Zak’s a little shaky but okay. Kara’s tired and her hands and knees need attention. But they are okay. Lee asks how I’m doing. I’m fine now that we are all together. I am also amazed that Lee knew the sailboat would capsize and he had the right tool to free Zak.

Lee let’s us know that the sailboat will only hold two and will not handle well. He thinks that the best way for them to get back to the house is for Zak and I to take the canoe. He should sail back with Kara. The sailboat should get back first and Kara won’t have to do any work. Zak can rest a little and then help me paddle home.

Zak helps Kara into the sailboat. Lee heads for home. He keeps the boat moving but it is very sluggish. Zak and I are making steady but slow progress home.

Selena is at the dock when Lee and Kara arrive. She helps them tie the boat to the dock. Lee and Selena help Kara to the house. Lee suggests that Kara take a warm bath using liquid antibacterial soap. Selena tries to help her. Lee comes back to he dock to wait for Zak and me.

I’m very glad to see Lee at the dock. Each stroke is now painful. I need his help to get out of the canoe. Zak appears to have recovered. He isn’t even limping. Lee hangs the four life vests to dry. Lee thanks me for my help as we follow Zak up to the house.

Lee gets his brother and me each a glass of orange juice. Kara is out of the tub and dressed in shorts and a tee shirt.

She has dozens of splinters. Selena suggests that she go to the hospital.

Starbuck says, ”I don’t want to go to the hospital. I’ll have to wait. I’ll be poked at. Apollo can take the splinters out. Apollo can take care of the splinters.”

Lee says, “Starbuck the hospital has trained staff, special equipment and nice painkillers.”

“Kara, You need to be examined. You may be seriously hurt,” Selena insists.

“I just have some splinters. Apollo and the Commander came and got us. We are okay,” Kara says, “Apollo start taking out my splinters.”

“Son you are very good at removing splinters,” I say, as I remember the hundreds of shards embedded in my face.

Zak sits with his arms around Kara comforting her. Lee removes splinters from the palms of both of Kara hands, her knees and her inner thighs. These splinters are larger and easier to see than the ones he removed from me. The warm bath has loosened them. With patience and skill, he removes the splinters without hurting her. Finally it’s over. He ices the area to reduce the swelling and applies antibiotic. Selena wraps the areas with gauss to protect them.

Lee gets up and returns with a glass of iced ginger ale with a straw. He gives the drink to Zak saying, “She needs fluids.”

I ask if he can get Kara anything. Kara replies that she would like her Sparta sweatshirt, and socks from her duffle. I raise an eyebrow, but head upstairs to get the desired items.

Kara stiffly moves her legs so her feet are in Lees lap. Lee rubs them almost automatically. When I return with Kara’s things, Lee puts the socks on her feet. She raises her hands and Zak puts on her Sparta cadet captain’s athletic sweatshirt.

“Kara, what are you doing with Lee’s sweatshirt?” Selena asks.

“It’s mine. He can’t have it back. I need it when I’m sick,” Kara rattles on like a spoiled child.

Lee says softly, “The sweatshirt is yours. Why don’t you drink some of your ginger ale?”

Selena and I look at Zak and Kara, thankful that both are still alive. Lee and I got to them in time. Thank the Lords.

Selena announces that she is going to start dinner. They all must be starved.

“How can you talk about food? These idiots nearly throw their lives away. They are completely irresponsible. We could have lost them,” Lee yells furiously angry. He turns a walks out of the house.

Everyone is stunned. Lee doesn’t yell. Lee never raises his voice to his mother. He doesn’t call his brother an idiot. He was calm a minute ago. He’d been in control during the rescue. And very gentle toward Kara has he removed the splinter’s. Suddenly there’s wild fury. It only lasted seconds.

I’m the first to recover. “He’s right you acted in a very irresponsible manner. You are only alive because he sensed something was wrong and acted quickly. He’s suffering for today and for the last few months. Lee was badly frightened. Zak, Kara, you need to apologize. But you are going to have to wait until he calms down enough to listen.”

I walk over to Selena and hold her very gently. “He wasn’t yelling at you. He’s in pain.” Selena gives me a nod and a little squeeze on the arm. She turns and walks to her room and closes the door.

I go to the cabinet and take the bottle of ambrosia and I head for the cottage. My arms, neck, and back are throbbing. A hot shower, a couple of stuff drinks and bed.

Kara and Zak cling to each other. They just wanted to have fun. Zak can’t stand that Lee is furious at him. Kara is confused. Apollo is supposed to be dependable and calm to the point of coldness.

The Adama meal machine comes to a halt Selena, Zak, and Kara fall asleep listening for the sound of Lee coming home.

Chapter 11

“Adama,” I say in response to the ringing of my cell phone.

“Hello Sir, It’s Lee.” I hear from the other end of the phone.

“What time is it? Why are you calling?” I ask.

“It’s about six. I’m not home. I’m calling to let you know I’m okay and will be home by eight,” Lee replies.

“Your telling me you’ve been out all night. Just like that. What are you thinking?” I snap into the phone.

“Sir, that you will be up first and can tell the rest of the family not to worry. I’ll be home soon,” Lee replies and disconnects.

I wish I hadn’t snapped at him but I don’t appreciate being hung up on.

I find it painful to get up. My shoulders still hurt from yesterday’s events. But I need to get up and deal with Lee and the rest of the family. I head for the main house. I start coffee and tea. Clean up the few glasses and medical supplies. I make myself a couple of slices toast and drink a glass of orange juice.

At seven thirty the kitchen door opens. Lee walks in. He has on the same clothes as last night but Lee has had a shower. He appears calm. His eyes are clear. He helps himself to a cup of tea.

“Sir, I apologize for my rudeness and any inconvenience I caused,” Lee says. I feel that Lee was looking over my left ear when he spoke to me. Lee is braced for a dressing down. He is emotionally unreachable. I want to avoid putting Lee in a situation in which he shuts down emotionally. So I don’t ask. What do you mean abandoning your family? Where the hell have you been? How dare you hang up on your father?

“Lee, you need to make things right with your mother,” I say as gently as I can manage.

“Yes Sir,“ Lee says. He starts taking things out of the refrigerator.

“So, you’re just going to start breakfast like nothings happened. Is that it?” I ask.

“Yes Sir, I’ll apologize to Mom. But we need to eat. If I’m helpful I might be easier to forgive,” Lee says grimly.

Selena comes into the room. She is dressed but without her usual care. “Lee are you alright?” she asks as she hugs Lee.

“Yes Mom, I’m fine and I’m very sorry for yelling and walking out,” Lee says sincerely.

Selena holds her sons face in her hands and kisses him on the check. “Yell if you must, but don’t leave I need you,” She says, “I want to cook this morning. Get out of my way.” She kisses and hugs her son as she pushes him out of the kitchen. Selena has forgiven Lee.

Lee goes up stairs to take an unnecessary shower and change. Shortly after Lee starts the shower, Zak and Kara come down stairs. Zak tells his parents that Lee is up.

Selena says, “Yes I know. Lee didn’t come home last night. Where could he have gone?”

Zak answers with surprising speed, “Mom, It’s Lee at the lake. Once he got tired he could have gone to a neighbors, one of Aunt Lena’s friends, or friends his own age. Lee’s always been so nice lots of people would have taken him in. Mom, there isn’t anything to worry about it.”

I think Zak’s answer was too fast. Zak is covering for his brother. Does Lee have a lover? What is Lee’s sexual behavior?

Lee comes down stairs. I watch as the brothers make up. Zak says he was sorry and tries to hug Lee. Lee rejects the apology and the hug but stays close. Zak assures Lee that he and Kara are okay. Kara shows Lee that her hands and knees are healing. Lee says he wouldn’t survive losing Zak in an avoidable accident. Lee tells Kara that she wouldn’t fly a viper without preflight check. How could she sail without a life vest? Zak promises to follow the water safety rules. He and Kara will wear life vests. Lee hugs Zak and says, “Okay”.

Zak goes and sits on the sofa. Lee goes and joins him. Zak hugs Lee. Once Zak has a good hold on Lee. Zak signals Kara to join them. Zak and Kara keep hugging and gently patting Lee until he’s docile. It’s like watching puppies. The pack now has its alpha pup in check. Things are mostly okay.

Lee says that Zak should help with breakfast before he goes down to the dock to service and clean both the canoe and the sailboat. He stretches out on the sofa smiling. Kara and Zak head toward the kitchen, but Kara hits Lee with a pillow on the way.

After breakfast, I take a cup of coffee out to the deck to think about the situation. Lee hasn’t talked about his feelings. Lee is much more likely to show than tell. Lee has been good to his mother, Zak and Kara. Lee has been very kind to me but hasn’t forgiven any of the pasts hurt. Lee had just the right tool to free Zak. How could Lee possibly have known that Zak’s foot would be caught? Selena, Zak and Kara accept Lee’s rescue, without surprise. I need an opening.

Before I can analyze him further. Lee comes over to me. “How are your shoulders?“ he asks.

“They’re still stiff. I don’t recover as fast as I used to,” I reply.

“I can help you with that if you want. I can give a massage.” Lee says.

I’m not sure how I feel about his offer and respond with a question “How did you happen to get trained in massage? Not something you think of as part of Sparta’s curriculum.”

“I was taught as part of my Pac training. In addition to meditation, exercise, and martial arts, I was also taught massage and reflexology,” Lee replies.

“Well if you don’t mind?” I reply.

“Dad go straddle one of the dining room chairs,” Lee says smiling and shaking his head.

After a few minutes my neck shoulders and upper arms feel much better. Lee has yet another skill. After a few ”hahs”, “a little harder please” and “don’t stop,” I thank my son.

I know Lee is very accomplished in Pac. This might be the subject to begin a conversation. “Lee, I was surprised when you started to compete in martial arts? What made you choose the sport?” I ask.

“It chose me. Sparta does a very detailed evaluation of student physical skills and talents. I’m fast and I entered Sparta with ten years of Pac’s training. I was strongly encouraged to join the team. I gained confidence, as I became a ranked competitor and status when I became a champion. My classmates were much less likely to try a push me around,” Lee replies.

“You were picked on?” I ask but immediately regret.

“Sir, I was two years younger than my classmates and appeared about four year younger. All my classmates were bright and competitive but only some were kind,” Lee replies in a flat voice.

There is a long painful silence. Finally Lee says in the same flat voice, “Sir, I needed every bit of Pac’s training I had and a very tough skin to survive Myra Dawn.”

Kara comes bouncing into the house, and saves us. “Come out. Zak has both boats all clean. I have on my life vest. Selena says the wind is up. Its time to sail!” Kara announces with glee.

Lee sails with each of us. Lee gives Zak a lesson on righting the sailboat. Lee and Zak give Kara a long ride in the canoe. Selena and I go for a sail. We have taken advantage of the good wind. It is nearly three when they return to the house. Lee is clearly tired. He pours himself a glass of milk. He excuses himself to take a nap. Selena is uneasy about Lee skipping a meal, but Zak, Kara, and I reassure her that Lee is eating well and he should avoid getting over tired.

Kara comment is to the point. “Lee only acts prickly, sad or angry when he’s tired. He’ll be more likely to be happy or at least controlled if we let he crash.”

Chapter 12

Lee has crashed. He sleeps for twenty hours straight. The Commander and I continually reassure Zak and Selena. Lee needs the rest. He will not starve. He will wake up when he is ready. He is awake in time for lunch the next day.

Something subtle has changed. He is ravenously hungry. He’s easy. When Selena offers to makes him a cheese omelet to go with his sandwiches and milk, “Oh yes, please, Mom.” “It’s great Mom.”

Zak tells Lee that Mom made him save Lee a big piece of lemon meringue pie from last night. Lee is very happy. “You cut, I’ll choose,” he says to Zak indicating that he wants share his piece of pie with his brother.

Selena and Zak are pleased a punch that Lee is letting them wait on him. They almost glow.

Selena suggests that they go to Nova Eire, resort town that has lots of restaurants, art galleries, clothes stores and antique shops. Lee says he really wants to take everyone out to eat as an apology for his rude and inconsiderate behavior. It would be fun way for Zak, Dad and me to spend our last evening.

Selena, the Commander, Zak and I are in this gallery that has a show of jewelry. Lee is outside eating an ice cream cone. Selena is looking at one of the cases of jewelry. An artistically dressed woman approaches Selena and says, “Excuse me but are you wearing a Myra Dawn star amethyst?”

“Yes,” She says.

“I’m Peg Mott. I designed some of the jewelry in the case over there. Myra Dawn star amethysts are very rare. I was wondering if you would let me look at yours?” Peg asks.

“Alright,” Selena says taking off her necklace so Peg can look at it.

“This is a beautiful gem. It’s investment quality. Do you have any idea how much it’s worth?” Peg asks?

“No, it was a gift from my son,” Selena replies. Zak, the Commander and I listen in.

“I bet your son’s a Ranger just home from Myra Dawn. My husband brought me one home too. My stone isn’t nearly as fine as yours. My husband is Master Chief Pat Mott,” Peg says.

“I’m Selena Adama. My son is Lieutenant Lee Adama,” Selena says.

“Oh Lords, I’m so glad to meet you. I ‘m truly grateful to your son for saving Pat’s life. Your son is very brave man. I’m so sorry your son suffered so much. It’s very difficult to recover from the type of abuse,” Peg says her voice full of sadness.

“What do you mean? I’ve been told that my son will make a full recovery,” Selena asks concerned.

“Well, the men don’t like to talk about it. I heard from Ann, Stan Allen’s wife. Stan was with your son when it happened. Stan feels terrible about what happened to your son. Ann says, it’s going to take Stan along time to recover and he was just held captive.

Selena interrupts Peg, “Please tell me about my son.”

“Oh, I’m sorry, a giant Amazon hit him with a nine foot pole and captured him. The tribe of Amazons used drugs on him, stripped him naked and manhandled him. Ann told me that they tortured him, and forced to walk for miles on damaged feet. A three hundred pound tattooed giantess named Dame Magda threatened to kill Stan and the other men in the team if your son didn’t have sex with her. She extorted sex from him for seven days. Stan said that being mauled by Dame Magda must be worse than death. Men are very embarrassed about being helpless. My Pat thinks the world of your son; he admits that Stan told him the story. Pat doesn’t think Stan is lying, but he refuses to believe it happened. I’m sorry to be the one to tell you, but the military sometimes isn’t honest with families. I hope your son will be all right, but it’s a lot to endure. Again I’m sorry,” Peg finishes.

“Thank you for telling me,” Selena says. She looks at the Commander. His expression must have told her that he’d heard the story. From the way she looked at me, she guessed that I know too. Only Zak looks sufficiently shattered. I heard Stan tell Mott the story so I know the story has gotten worse with retelling. I also know Selena will believe it all.

Lee having finished his ice cream strolls into the gallery smiling. He sees that something is wrong with his mother and goes to her and says, “Hi Mom, What’s happening?”

“I’ve just been told, about your capture, torture, and rape by Dame Magda,” Selena replies.

Peg Mott looks at Lee and blurts out, “Oh, I must have made a mistake your son is still a kid.”

“Slow down Mom, I’m all right. I was not captured, tortured, or raped. You have heard a wild story. Please relax,” Lee says with surprising calm.

He turns to Peg Mott and politely introduces himself. Peg Mott is suddenly nervous. She has to let Lieutenant Adama know that Pat Mott is her husband. She knows the mission is classified and that Pat and Stan aren’t supposed to be talking about it. She doesn’t want to get Pat in trouble, especially with this officer. Lee very gently asks Peg where she got her information. She just tells him the truth. Ann Allen told her. Her husband Pat heard the story from Stan Allen but didn’t believe it was true.

“Your husband is right. Much of what she had heard must be incorrect. Mrs. Mott, there is a lot of stress on the Rangers and their families after a difficult mission. There are many unanswered questions the will remain unanswered because the mission is classified. Please respect the secrecy of the mission. It may save a soldier’s life in the future or save a mother needless worry. Please give my regards to your husband,” Lee says.

Turning to his mother he says, “Let’s go find a place to talk. He take’s his mother by the arm and walks her into the street. The rest of us are following. He goes two blocks off the main drag to find large nearly empty out door restaurant. He chooses a picnic table that offers the most privacy. He has his mother sit down. He walks to the bar. He talks to the bartender. He comes back with five glasses and two pitchers of beer. “The bartender will keep anyone from sitting near us for the next hour,” he says. He sits opposite his mother. He gives Zak and the beer a look. Zak serves everyone a glass of cold beer.

“Mom, I’ve been honest with you about my health. I was not captured or abused by anyone. Dame Magda is the Dame Regent of the Sumar tribes. She is a queen and the leader of her people. I went to visit her to form an alliance. My relationship with her was diplomatic I was acting as the ranking colonial officer on the planet. For reasons I am about explain I was separated from my team for seven days. Which likely led to this wild story. ”

“Mysticism plays an important in the tribes life. The tribe’s mystics have been having visions of a cataclysm for decades. The latest chapter involves a visit to Myra Dawn from someone they believe that will become a Lord of Kobol by saving the remnants of the human race. The visions include a warrior from the stars, a hunter, a trail of blood, and bringing the dead back to life. A mystic looking for signs tends to find them. I had had some success against the Sumar tribe’s biggest adversary. So when I came looking to open up relations between the tribes and the Colonial forces, the tribes head mystic, Dame Seer, was interested in me. It was a case of self-fulfilling prophecy. Dame Magda takes a ritualistic swipe at me with a pole, I’m asked to go hunting. The mystic sees warrior and hunter. I cut my feet on the rocks to get the girls out of the water. The mystic sees a trail of blood. I perform CPR on one of the girls. The Mystic sees bringing the dead back to life. When the Mystic finds out that I’m from a Battlestar she has a fulfilled prophesy.

Lee continues, “I am not aware of the prophecy. I’ve been concentrating on relationship building. I’m watching my manners. I’m honest about who I am and what my intentions are. Dame Magda is an intelligent rational woman. She no more believes that I have some kind of destiny than I do. We both agree that an alliance is in our mutual best interest.”

“All the tribes Mystics validated the signs, deeming me “the Young Lord.” The Mystics and the tribal council recommend that a significant bond be developed with me. Given their culture, Dame Magda must claim me. The Mystics and the tribal council want to ingratiate the tribe to me. They don’t want me harmed or embarrassed.”

“Men have no rights other than what they are given by their Dame. Dame Magda claimed me as a brother not a mate. I had to stay in Magda’s house, wear clothes provided by her family and behave as a member of her family. Then she can give me permission to remain single and get on with my mission. No Dame can interfere with my troops or me without her permission.

“Lee, you want me to believe that Dame Magda didn’t find you even a little attractive? She never touched you?” Selena asks.

“Mom, Sumar men wear their hair long. It is only cut as a sign of mourning or as a punishment for cheating on their dame. My hair is very short and my feet are damaged. Magda is not interested in some beat up colonial warrior. She is making a political alliance.”

“Dame Magda was very kind to me. I lost consciousness, probably due to a reaction a local beverage. She and her family took care of me while I was out. The reason I was the only one who could swim is because the water is painfully cold. Once I got the two girls to shore my feet were cut and bruised and I was very cold. Again Dame Magda and her family got me dry and warm. They care for my feet. I’m kept warm and allowed to rest. The only demands Dame Magda made of me was that I stay off my feet and eat well,” he says.

“In order to maintain the Magda’s position, my team is placed is placed under protective custody for seven days. I want to create and maintain stable relations with the tribes. I have to follow their customs closely. If the tribes thought I held them or their beliefs in disrespect, it would be extremely damaging to the Colonies relations with the tribes and potentially damaging to Dame Magda. I left before my feet a completely healed. I needed to get my team free and get back before the length of time we been gone caused concern with the main unit.”

“Mom, we had lots of enemies and problems. The Sumar tribes were our first and most trust worthy of our allies. Yes, it was based on a crazy prophecy but I’m thankful for the alliance. You need to have confidence in me. I have no intention of throwing my life away. I can’t keep talking about this mission. I’ve said more than I should so you won’t worry but it stops now.” Lee says with finality.

“So you are really going to be okay?” Selena asks.

“All I need to do is get my stamina and flight status back. All of you need to stay safe, and I’ll be just fine,” Lee says with a smile.

“Baby, Peg Mott has my necklace.” Selena says.

“Let’s go see if we can find her,” Lee says getting to his feet.

We make our way back to the gallery. Lee has calmed his mother’s fears. The Commander has stopped looking for signs of stress. Even I have to admit that there is more to Lee Adama than a Sparta brat and a good viper pilot.

Peg Mott is waiting for us. She isn’t going anywhere with Lieutenant Adama’s mother’s necklace. Lee is all respectful friendliness putting Mrs. Mott at ease. He introduces his family to her. When he introduces me, Peg sees my necklace. Selena asked me to wear it with a new white top she bought me at the mall. Peg asks if she can have a look at my necklace. I can tell Lee is making nice, so I hand over my necklace. She looks at my necklace and says that me stone is also investment quality. She looks at Lee and says that he has made two very nice purchases. She estimates that Mrs. Adama stone is worth 8,000 cubits and mine is worth about 5,000 cubits. Lee thanks Mrs. Mott and we leave with our loot.

Peg Mott thinks men just don’t see anything. Lieutenant Adama is fine. How anyone could talk about him and not mention that he’s handsome, charming and nice hasn’t a clue. She’s going to call Ann Allen and tell her about Lieutenant Adama’s blues eyes and assure her that there is absolutely nothing wrong with that man.

I know I should give the necklace back. I’m really not meant to have a valuable stupid present. But I decide to keep it until we get back to the house.

We spend the rest of the afternoon shopping. The Commander and I buy books. I stop at a cigar shop. Selena and Zak shop with vigor. Lee has two shopping bags one from a camping equipment shop and one from a fancy food store.

Lee takes us out to dinner at a fancy inn. We have drinks on a veranda with a view of gardens and the lake. After an elegant dinner we have coffee and desert by a fireplace.

I’m feeling, I don’t know uneasy.

I ask Selena, “How come Lee is the baby, when Zak is younger?”

“Zak was a very big baby 10lbs 3oz and he grew very fast. He was grown by the time he was fifteen. Lee takes after my mother’s side of the family, he was only 5lbs 6oz and unusually slow to grow. He grew an inch while he was in advanced flight training with you, Kara. I had Lee alone for over a year. Zak was very influenced by Lee. Zak wanted to do and have everything the same as Lee. Zak demanded little boy clothes like Lee’s even before he could really talk. Zak just didn’t seem to be a baby for very long.” Selena replies.

I light up one of my cigars. I swear it was just out of habit. I exhale right in Apollo’s face. His eyes water and he struggles breath for a minute. Zak makes a grab for my cigar but Apollo is much faster. He blocks Zak move.

“Starbuck you are out of rope. I am not taking back the necklace. Sell it if you want. Throw it away. But it’s yours!” Lee says vehemently.

“What? How did you know? You have to take it back. I’m not meant to have fancy stuff like that,” I say feeling like I’ve just been blindsided.

Selena laughs and laughs finally she says, “Lee can be so much like his father. It’s so unnerving when they know what you’re thinking.”

“Zak tell your fragile brother that he has to take his valuable dumb present back,” I demand.

“Kara, I’m real happy Lee bought you a very nice present. It means he’s happy about you and me. He loves me too much to ever say anything negative about anyone I love. I’m glad he went out of his way for you. I want you to have nice things. He’s right to make you keep it,” Zak says with determination.

“Starbuck, Why don’t we go out on the veranda, so you can finish your cigar and Lee can breath. You are up against the brothers Adamant. Let it go,” The Commander says to me with a smile. We go outside. The fresh air and a good smoke make me feel less tense.

“Fragile is a very interesting adjective to apply to Lee, Starbuck,” the Commander comments.

“Oh, Zak was just so worried about Lee when he was MIA. He was afraid Lee would be alone, cold, not eating, and not able to rest. Zak didn’t think Lee would not be able to handle it.” I reply.

“Oh, I see,” he says. I get the distinct feeling he knows that Zak has told me about Lee’s genes. But he doesn’t pursue it. “You expect a great deal from Lee. He is very sensitive to cigar smoke. Blowing smoke in his face is cruel. Everyone has some weaknesses even Lee.”

I tell the Commander that it was an accident. I hadn’t realized Lee was so close. I know that I owe Lee ‘Big Time’. I wouldn’t be a viper pilot, probably wouldn’t be a flight instructor. Zak and I might even be dead. I hate it. Lee will never ask for anything.

But as I get mixed up with the Adama family there is a price. For starters, I can’t blow smoke in Apollo’s face and I can’t call him names in front of his family. Who knows how far it might go. Zak and Selena are probably going to expect me to protect their sweet, sensitive, shy baby.

Zak and I take full advantage of our last night in our full size bed.

Chapter 13

The next day we spend a couple of hours by the lake. We change, pack, and have an early lunch. Both Selena and Lee are going to take us to the plane. Selena has packed snacks for Zak, the Commander and I for the plane. Lee has packages for his dad and me. Lee has bought a number of treats for the Commander to take back to the Galactica. His dad’s favorite gourmet coffees, candies, mints, and nuts are included. A large supply of eyeglass wipes, batteries, and a very fancy food storage container from camping supply store complete the gift. The Commander is pretty hard to read but really likes this care package and I think he’s very happy.

I don’t want to take another gift from Lee. I tell him I don’t give gifts so I don’t want to take them.

“You don’t have to give gifts. Your zest for life is gift enough,” Lee says. He has an answer for everything. Zak, Selena and the Commander nod their heads to agree with him.

I open my package. It’s a container identical to the Commanders. Mine is full of mini chocolate bars.

Lee says, “This is not a dumb present. It’s practical. Compact, airtight containers are very useful in space.”

I don’t say so, but I think being surprised with mini chocolate bars is a wonderful present.

The Commander is the first to drive. Selena is in the front passenger seat. Lee, Zak and I are in the back. Zak is in the middle. Lee falls asleep, Zak moves so Lees cheek rest on his arm. Lee looks peaceful. The rest of us feel relaxed and travel happily in silence until he wakes up.

I take over driving from the Commander; Selena sits in back next to Zak. When we arrive at the airport. Zak and Selena give hugs and kisses all around. The Commander has to grab Lee, but Lee returns his hug. Selena starting to arrange the next family trip to the lake. “Starbuck, Keep safe,” Lee says in that quiet voice.

I’m surprised but I’m really looking forward to my next visit to lake. Don’t tell anyone but I’m looking forward to spending time with Zak and Lee. I might get to fly with Apollo. Okay, I really want to fly with Apollo.
