When they were kids Adar was her best friend, they rode their bikes around the neighbourhood, hid in the clubhouse they had built to escape her sisters. When they were teenagers, Laura had the biggest crush on him - all the girls in high school did. He was popular; he had charisma but he only had eyes for Laura.

He’s always been there. Through every major event in her life.

Adar was with her when the police arrived at the house and told her that her father and sisters were dead. He had held her; though she did not cry. He stood by her at the funeral, took her hand and wiped away her tears when they finally fell.

He was at her University graduation, took her to dinner to celebrate her first day of teaching, supported her through her Education Secretary nomination and appointment, and was at her side in the hospital when her mother took her last breath.

He helped Laura keep on.

Now, as she lies in her bed on Colonial One, she keeps expecting him to show up. At night, she can almost hear his voice trying to soothe her, almost feel his arms about her. Sometimes, in the early hours, she can smell his cologne… and sometimes it feel like he’s just left the room, as if he’ll return any second and Laura finds herself waiting…

He was her one constant. He promised he’d never leave her. He lied. And she so desperately wants to hold him once again, to feel his hands tangled in her hair as his lips press against hers.

Laura has nothing of his - she doesn’t need anything material; she holds his memory inside her. She mentions him whenever she can, speaks his name at every opportunity, and then the pain is manageable. His love for her was real and because of that, she’ll always consider herself lucky.

Adar was her friend, her lover, her counsellor, her family. She has always loved him in some way. Now he’s gone, and he’s taken part of her with him.
