Laura hummed to herself as she wandered along Bill's bookshelf,
pulling out and glancing through volumes at random. The eclectic
taste of the man never ceased to amaze her. He had books on history,
science, the arts-a virtual school curriculum of subjects. She was
so glad that they had already uploaded most of the teaching
recourses to the mainframe before the attack. She would have hated
to commandeer his books for fleet-wide use. She knew just how much
he valued them.
One small thick volume in the middle of a row caught her eye.
There
was no title or author embossed on its spine, and curiosity made her
extract it for closer study. The front cover was equally devoid of
marking, though by its battered state, it was clearly well travelled.
Inside she found a collection of poems and verses, all written in a
handwriting she instantly recognised, some of the were familiar,
others she could not recall-but it was clear that each had a special
meaning to the man who had so carefully copied them.
Every piece contained a note telling the reader where it was from
and who was the original author. They also bore a date and a
notation explaining their selection.
Laura was fascinated, she could well believe Bill loved poetry and
verse, one only had to listen to him speak to admire his mastery of
the language. It made sense that he in turn, would admire the
Colonies' great writers.
Laura carried the thick volume back to the sofa with her, the
other
grander tomes easily forgotten in the face of such a treasure. She
welcomed anything that taught her more about the man she had come to
love so much. She jumped at this opportunity to find out more; she
doubted Bill would mind her intrusion, but she would apologise if he
objected when he got home.
The verses were diverse in nature; some were excerpts from a longer
book; some, poems in their entirety, whilst others were words or
phrases from popular songs and arias-each one touching a special
place in his heart. The dates in the book suggested it had been kept
by its owner for a long, long time. The early entries dated back to
a time before the cylon war, others captured events like the birth
of his sons. The last dated entry was just before the cylon attack
on their home worlds. Clearly its owner had not had the time for
poetic reflection in the months since. She could well understand why.
She was about to close the book and return it to its place on the
shelf when she realised there was one further entry. It was towards
the end of the book, easily over looked, yet once found the words
jumped out at her. It too contained its source and author, but it
had no date as to when the entry had been made-it merely had one
word beside it "Laura"
She read the words on the page and felt them reverberate through
her, each line reflecting a part of her life; the heightened
emotions he made her feel when they were together. With him, she was
both a woman and the child..making love stoked a warm fire inside
her, igniting her in a way she had not thought possible. He
completed her. Finding him had been a miracle she had not expected
and never dared even hope for. Her search was finally over; death
would have to tear them apart because she would never willingly
leave him. Not now.
But how had Bill known? She choked back a sob; the author had
captured her emotions so well. If she had written the words herself
she could not have expressed her feelings better. It was uncanny,
even the title was apt, for he was truly was "The last man in my
life," both by her choice and by the finger of fate.
When Bill got back to his quarters he found Laura curled up on the
sofa clutching a book to her chest with tears sliding slowly down
her face.
He was instantly concerned, for he could count the number of times
he had seen Laura cry on one hand, but when he asked her what was
wrong all she could say was,
"How did you know?"
"Know what?"
"That this was how I felt about us," was her tearful response.
Bill was truly bemused, what did she mean?-then he realised which
book she was holding.
"You found that?"
"Yes, and I read the verse with my name on it-you know me so well."
"No, but I am learning a little more with each moment we spend
together," he said softly.
"Then why did you..?" She was puzzled.
"I didn't-the words weren't about your feelings for me, they
reflected mine for you," he said gently." I came across the old song
when I was looking for some music Kara wanted to borrow, and it hit
me just how much the words reflected how I felt about you, and the
way you make me feel emotions I had never expected to feel again,
and more. You make me feel complete for the first time in my life."
He got to his feet and walked to the music station and pushed a
couple of buttons. Then he turned back to her and held out his
hand. "Dance with me, to our song?" He requested tenderly.
Laura rose up and walked into his arms as the words of the old love
song softly filled the room, lyrically reflecting the love they felt
for each other.
The Last Man in My Life
A. Lloyd Webber, Don Black( from Tell me on a Sunday)
I'm a lady when you kiss me
I'm a child when you are leaving
I'm a woman
Every time our bodies meet
Complete
Long lost feelings
Stir inside me
Used to think
Nights were for sleeping
Being wanted
Is a thrill I never knew
Till you
Now I'm alive inside
I'm glowing
I`m how I want to be
Loving you
I can be me
Just me
It's the first time
When you touch me
Now I long for raining mornings
I am certain you are the last man in my life
I'm a woman
Every time our bodies meet
Complete
Long lost feelings
Stir inside me
Used to think
Nights were for sleeping
Being wanted
Is a thrill I never knew
Till you
Now I am alive inside
I am glowing
I am how I want to be
Loving you
I can be me
Just me
It's the first time when you touch me
Now I long for rainy mornings
Tell each other
To find all we are looking for
And more
Found a rainbow I was after
No more dreams with one face missing
I am certain you are the last man in my life
